The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued an alarming forecast: as early as 2027, humanity may face unprecedented heat that will shatter all historical records. UN experts warn that the combination of anthropogenic climate change and the natural El Niño phenomenon will create a "perfect storm" for extreme temperatures.

### The Math of Catastrophe: Why 2027 Will Be a Turning Point

According to a report by the UK Met Office, there is an 86% chance that at least one year between 2026 and 2030 will be hotter than 2024. Moreover, the peak of this temperature anomaly could occur specifically in 2027. This is not just statistics — it is a scenario that has already partially unfolded in Europe, India, and other parts of Asia, where heatwaves have caused thousands of deaths.

Scientists emphasize: global warming is already claiming human lives — approximately one death every minute. If CO₂ emissions are not drastically reduced, this figure will grow exponentially. An atmosphere overloaded with greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels acts like a thermos, trapping heat and intensifying extreme weather events — from droughts to floods.

### El Niño: The Natural Catalyst of Apocalypse

A key factor that will intensify the heat in 2027 will be the return of El Niño — a cyclical phenomenon linked to changes in Pacific Ocean surface temperatures and the redistribution of heat in the atmosphere. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the probability of its formation at the end of 2026 or early 2027 reaches 96%. "El Niño is forecast for late 2026, increasing the likelihood that the following year, 2027, will be the next record-breaking year," noted Dr. Leon Herman, lead author of the WMO report.

The goal of the Paris Climate Agreement — to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels — now seems unattainable. However, limiting warming to 2°C is still possible provided immediate and large-scale action is taken to reduce emissions. The probability of exceeding the 2°C threshold between 2026 and 2030 is estimated at less than 1% — but even such a small risk could lead to irreversible consequences.

"We must start by quickly eliminating dependence on fossil fuels," added Stiell. Today, renewable energy is cheaper and produced faster than coal or oil. Investing in green technologies is not only an environmental responsibility but also an economic necessity.

Forecasters predict heatwaves in Ukraine during the summer of 2026, but experts like Vitaly Postrihan from the Cherkasy Hydrometcenter reassure: we are not talking about +50°C in the shade. Professor Vazira Martazinova expects sufficient rainfall, with heat only on certain days. The Ukrainian Hydrometcenter called the scenario of "plus 40 all summer" speculative. Nevertheless, even a moderate temperature rise could pose a serious challenge to infrastructure, agriculture, and public health.

An international commission of experts has urged the World Health Organization (WHO) to officially declare the climate crisis a global health emergency. The agency’s report warns of the risk of millions of deaths due to heat, floods, air pollution, and the spread of infectious diseases. Climate is not just weather.
