Scientists at Irkutsk State University (ISU) have achieved a breakthrough in monitoring the unique ecosystem of Lake Baikal. A specialized neural network has been implemented, capable of analyzing water samples at incredible speed. Where hydrobiologists previously required days of painstaking manual work, artificial intelligence now completes the task in a matter of hours.

### Technology Proven by Time

The new system is integrated into the "Point No. 1" monitoring program — one of the oldest in Russia. Observations of the water body in this area of Southern Baikal have been conducted continuously since 1945. Now, traditional research methods are receiving powerful digital support.

The accuracy of the algorithms reaches 87%, which is comparable to the results of expert analysis conducted manually. Calculations are performed on the Yandex Cloud platform. This allows for the processing of huge datasets coming from microscopes without loss of quality.

### Scale of Work and Relief for Specialists

The process of water sampling at "Point No. 1" occurs regularly — once every one to two weeks. The main task of the research is to determine the species composition and abundance of zooplankton. Since 2022, when the system began to function fully, it has already processed more than 250,000 images obtained from 811 water samples.

The introduction of AI radically changes the scientists' workflow. The neural network takes over the routine mass part of the work, leaving specialists only with complex cases and the analysis of previously unseen microorganism species. This significantly accelerates the detection of changes in the structure of zooplankton communities, which is critical for the operational assessment of the lake's condition.

### Zooplankton as an Indicator of Baikal's Health

Zooplankton is one of the key biological indicators. Based on its species composition and abundance, scientists assess the impact of climatic, natural, and anthropogenic factors on the lake. In the future, the computer vision technology, which has proven its effectiveness, is planned to be applied to the analysis of microplastics in water samples.

### Signs of Ecosystem Stabilization

Recent data on the state of the lake gives reason for cautious optimism. In 2025, the transparency of the water in Baikal increased to 28 meters. For comparison: in 2024, this indicator was 25 meters, and in 2023 — 23 meters.

Moreover, the surface water temperature was three degrees lower than in the anomalously hot previous year. This indicates the stability of the ecosystem, despite natural fluctuations and the return of fragments of Spirogyra to the upper layers of water. The combination of these factors and new monitoring technologies allows hope for the preservation of this unique natural object.
