A millennia-old mystery that has plagued linguists and historians has finally received an unexpected solution. Canadian scientists, armed with artificial intelligence, have put forward a revolutionary hypothesis: the mysterious symbols on the seals of the Indus Valley Civilization are not a language, but the world's oldest cashless payment system.

The Bronze Age Indus (Harappan) Civilization, which existed from 2600 to 1900 BCE, was a giant of its time. It covered an area of about one million square kilometers and conducted active international trade. However, despite the scale of the economy, archaeologists never found coins among the Harappans. For a century, researchers unsuccessfully tried to decipher the inscriptions as spoken language, but the Institute for Integrative and Interdisciplinary Studies in Toronto claims: the mistake lay in the approach itself.

### Neural Networks vs. Linguistics

To test the new theory, a scientific team led by Boris Kröger conducted an experiment published in the journal *IIIR Computational Humanities and Cultural Systems*. Instead of traditional philological analysis, the researchers used the Claude Opus neural network to calculate the positional entropy of the inscriptions.

The sample included 179 seals depicting a unicorn, found during excavations of the ancient city of Mohenjo-Daro. AI allowed the identification of mathematical patterns that were invisible to the human eye:

    - **Uniqueness of codes:** 98.3% of all inscriptions on the seals are absolutely unique sequences of signs. This statistically excludes the possibility that they are simply proper names or a random set of symbols.

    - **Data structure:** The level of information diversity (entropy) sharply shrinks at the edges of the inscriptions and expands in the center. Scientists compare this to formatted codes, such as a taxpayer identification number, rather than living speech.

    - **Position of numbers:** Symbols denoting numerals make up 15.4% of the total array and are almost always in the penultimate position. This matches the location of category or tariff type fields in modern documents.

    - **The anomaly of the number two:** The number 2 appears in 66.9% of cases among all numerals. Researchers believe this indicates the fixation of access levels or statuses in a trade guild, rather than counting the quantity of goods.

### How the Ancient Bank Card Worked

According to the conclusions of Canadian scientists, the system functioned on the principle of modern acquiring. The raised signs on the stone seal, which the merchant carried with him, were pressed into raw clay. This process created a transactional imprint, similar to how embossed digits on an old credit card left a mark on carbon paper.

Such a mechanism allowed for a complete separation of the authorization tool (the seal, which remained with the owner) and the transaction record (the clay impression, which was taken by the counterparties). Thus, the artifacts turned out to be purely administrative credit instruments.

Now the authors of the study have formulated clear criteria to confirm their theory: they plan to test the entire array of 5,500 known inscriptions. Since the work offers a mathematically substantiated solution to one of humanity's oldest mysteries, the researchers have officially applied for the Iravatham Mahadevan Prize of $1 million USD.
