# AI to the Moon: Nvidia and Lunar Outpost Create Autonomous Rovers for the Artemis Program

Technology giant Nvidia, in collaboration with Lunar Outpost, is launching an ambitious project to bring artificial intelligence to the lunar surface. The system under development aims to radically change the approach to space exploration, allowing rovers to process data and make decisions autonomously, without the delays associated with transmitting commands from Earth.

The primary goal of implementing onboard AI is to ensure the complete independence of the rovers, which will participate in NASA's Artemis lunar program. In the conditions of space, where signals to Earth experience significant delays, the ability of a machine to instantly react to changing circumstances becomes critically important for mission success.

### First Test in 2026

Practical testing of the new technologies is scheduled for late 2026 as part of the Lunar Voyage 2 mission. During this expedition, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will deliver the rover to the area of the Rima Gamma lunar anomaly.

The project unites the efforts of leading industry players. In addition to Nvidia and Lunar Outpost, General Motors and Goodyear are involved in the construction of the lunar rover. Engineers from these companies are working on a reliable platform capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of the lunar surface.

### Technological Background and Future

For Lunar Outpost, this is not the first step into space exploration. Previously, the company demonstrated its competence by assisting NASA and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the MOXIE experiment. From 2021 to 2023, this project successfully produced oxygen on Mars.

However, the new line of lunar rovers sets much more ambitious goals:

- In contrast to total dependence on Earth-based command centers, Nvidia Jetson modules will process information in real-time, ensuring an instant reaction to external stimuli.

- In subsequent missions, Lunar Voyage 3 and Lunar Voyage 5, developers plan to implement the first-ever human-robot collaborative research mission on another planet.

- To ensure live video streaming and precise terrain mapping during astronaut landings, a special Nvidia Space-1 Vera Rubin module will be used.

Lunar Outpost has already signed contracts to conduct ten lunar and cislunar missions by 2030. The manufacturer expects that the Nvidia Jetson hardware platform and CUDA-X software libraries will become the baseline standard for each of these expeditions, laying the foundation for a new era of autonomous space exploration.
