Amidst Valve's announcement of its own gaming console, the Steam Machine, priced at $1049, a debate has erupted within the professional community regarding the viability of buying ready-made solutions. Jacob Turkelson, an AMD engineer specializing in hardware verification for AI accelerator boards, presented a project that could revolutionize the perception of compact gaming systems. His creation is a small-form-factor personal computer positioned as a direct alternative to Valve's platform.

The uniqueness of the project lies in the rejection of proprietary components in favor of standard commercial parts. Turkelson managed to create a high-density modular system comparable in size and weight to classic game consoles, but without the limitations on upgrades.

### Hardware configuration: why Mini-ITX and Nvidia?

The engineer's key task was to minimize the internal volume of the case without compromising performance. The foundation of the system unit was a Mini-ITX standard motherboard. It is this format that allows powerful "hardware" to fit into dimensions familiar to console users.

In contrast, a custom build offers an open architecture. If the factory platform represents a closed or semi-custom ecosystem, then the Mini-ITX-based solution is a fully open platform for PC enthusiasts. The critical difference lies in the upgradeability: in consoles, components are often soldered, whereas in Turkelson's build, full replacement of CPU, GPU, and memory modules is possible.

Software flexibility also plays a decisive role. While the Steam Machine is optimized exclusively for SteamOS (Linux), the compact PC supports both Windows 11 and various GNU/Linux distributions, leaving the user free to choose.

### Technical challenges of small form factors

According to small form factor (SFF) standards specifications, designing systems with a density of less than 10 liters requires precise calculation of air mass convection vectors. The main goal is to prevent the effect of thermal throttling of the central and graphics processors, which inevitably arises from overheating in a closed volume.
