# Ammonia and Debris: How an Environmental Accident Was Contained in Kyiv After a Night Attack

On the night of August 5, Kyiv and the surrounding region were subjected to a massive attack, during which Russia used 28 ballistic missiles and 115 drones. Air defense forces failed to intercept any of the ballistic missiles, leading to serious consequences in the capital. In particular, industrial facilities in the Holosiivskyi district were damaged, resulting in an environmental accident.

### Technogenic Accident Amidst Hostilities

As a result of the massive strike in the Holosiivskyi district, debris and the shock wave damaged production equipment at one of the enterprises. The State Ecological Inspection promptly arrived at the scene of the incident and recorded an unorganized release of pollutants into the atmosphere.

The cause of the release was shrapnel damage to the cooling tower fans and the pipelines of the ammonia storage tank. This led to a partial leak of the hazardous substance. According to preliminary data, the volume of the leak exceeded 100 liters. Part of the ammonia entered the enterprise's cooling system.

### Rapid Response and Situation Control

The situation was brought under control thanks to the actions of the personnel and emergency services. After the alarm system was triggered, the enterprise workers shut off the shut-off valves, which prevented further spread of ammonia. Upon the arrival of rescuers, the leak was fully contained, and there is no threat of a repeat release.

During reconnaissance on the enterprise territory, minor exceedances of ammonia concentration were recorded. However, inspectors conducted a thorough analysis of the air environment and reported important data for the residents of the district:

- Carbon monoxide was not detected.

- Nitrogen dioxide is absent.

- Hydrogen cyanide was not found.

These indicators do not pose a threat to the health and well-being of people living near the site of the accident.

### Damage Assessment and Further Actions

The State Ecological Inspection has begun calculating the amount of damage caused. The assessment will be conducted in accordance with the approved methodology, taking into account unorganized emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere caused by military aggression. The Ministry of Economy and Environment of Ukraine continues to monitor the situation.

The incident in the Holosiivskyi district serves as another reminder of how military actions affect not only infrastructure but also the environmental safety of citizens. Despite the successful containment of the leak, the consequences of the night attack will be studied by specialists for a long time.
