# Andrea Pirlo and the price of cooperation with Russia: why the football legend lost the chance to lead the Italian national team

In the world of sports, where careers often depend on reputation and connections, the name Andrea Pirlo remains one of the most recognizable. The legendary Italian footballer, known for his technique, tactical sense, and elegant play, moved into coaching after retiring. However, his path to leading the Italian national team was interrupted not by sporting reasons, but by political and economic factors — ties with Russian business.

### Ties with Russian capital became an obstacle

As reported by Sport RBC.UA, citing a comment by Vladislav Vlasyuk, the President of Ukraine’s Commissioner for Sanctions Policy, the refusal to appoint Pirlo as head coach of the Italian national team was a direct consequence of his cooperation with Russian structures. Specifically, this refers to betting companies such as Fonbet, which have been under Ukrainian sanctions since 2023 for financing the war against Ukraine.

“Any contact with Russian business carries high career risks,” Vlasyuk emphasized. According to him, even the most famous sports stars are not immune to consequences if their actions are perceived as supporting an aggressor state.

### Reputation matters more than money

The situation with Pirlo demonstrates how quickly the international community’s attitude toward Russian capital is changing. The broader the sanctions regime becomes, the fewer organizations are willing to risk their reputation for individuals cooperating with sanctioned Russian entities.

“Reputational and sanction-related consequences strike regardless of how legendary a sportsman or public figure you are,” Vlasyuk noted. Attempts to justify such cooperation by calling it “politicization” no longer work, he believes.

### Consequences extend beyond sports

According to the Commissioner, the effect of sanctions goes beyond legal restrictions. It fundamentally changes the perception of Russian capital worldwide. Sports institutions, international organizations, and even private companies are increasingly refusing to cooperate with those who consciously support sanctioned Russian structures.

Thus, Andrea Pirlo’s case becomes not just a story about a missed opportunity, but a symbol of a broader trend: in today’s world, choosing Russian money can cost someone their career, reputation, and the trust of the global community.
