Imagine a device capable of predicting eclipses and modeling planetary motion, created long before the invention of clocks. This is not science fiction, but reality frozen in bronze. We are talking about the Antikythera Mechanism — an artifact that forces historians of technology to reconsider their understanding of ancient civilizations.

Found in the early 20th century, this hand-cranked 'calculator' was hidden in the cargo of a sunken Roman ship. When divers raised a corrosion-covered lump of stone from a depth of 45 meters in 1901, no one guessed that a complex mechanical system was hidden inside.

### A Mystery Sleeping in the Museum

The find lay neglected in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens for a long time until, in 1902, politician Spyridon Stais noticed a strange detail embedded in the rust. It was a gear. Further investigation revealed that scientists were looking not just at a fragment, but at a complex device consisting of rows of gears with triangular teeth nested inside one another.

Reconstructions based on X-ray tomography confirmed: the original mechanism contained about 37 hand-cut bronze wheels packed into a wooden case about 34 centimeters high. The largest gear was 14 centimeters wide, and the teeth were machined individually with incredible precision.

### Mechanics Ahead of Newton

The most astonishing thing about the mechanism is not just the presence of gears, but their function. It was capable of modeling the Moon's uneven orbit. The Moon does not move around the Earth in a perfect circle, speeding up and slowing down. To reproduce this 'lunar anomaly', ancient engineers used an offset pin, causing one gear to oscillate relative to another.

This mechanical solution to the problem of celestial geometry was developed two thousand years before Isaac Newton. By turning a handle, the user could see the position of the Sun, the phase of the Moon, the date in several calendars, and even eclipse predictions on the dials.

### Calendar and Predictions

On the back panel of the device were spiral dials tracking long cycles: the Metonic cycle (19 years) and the Saros cycle (18 years and 11 days). If the pointer stopped on a certain symbol, it meant an eclipse was approaching. The mechanism indicated whether it would be solar or lunar, when it would occur, and even what color the Moon would be during a total eclipse.

A 2024 study conducted by the University of Glasgow using gravitational wave analysis methods refined the details of the device. Scientists found that the calendar ring on the front panel most likely corresponded to the Greek lunar year, not the Egyptian solar year.

Who exactly created this masterpiece remains a mystery. The main candidates are circles associated with Archimedes of Syracuse. One thing is certain: the Antikythera Mechanism is proof that the ancient world possessed technologies that humanity forgot for a thousand and a half years.
