# Arctic Ultimatum: Norway Warns NATO of Nuclear Threat Risk Due to Svalbard Strait

Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sandvik has voiced alarming forecasts regarding security in the Arctic Ocean. According to him, Russia intends to challenge NATO in the Arctic, striving to establish full control over strategically important areas. Experts warn: seizing this region could give Moscow the ability to threaten Europe with hypersonic weapons.

### Nuclear Arsenal in the North

According to data cited in the report, Russia has concentrated a significant portion of its nuclear arsenal specifically in the waters of the Arctic Ocean. The aggressor is actively expanding the size and capabilities of its Northern Fleet. In recent years, there have been increasingly frequent sightings of Russian submarines in close proximity to the territorial waters of Alliance countries.

The main focus of growing tension has become the strait between mainland Norway and the Svalbard archipelago. Control over this narrow stretch of water would allow Moscow to create a so-called "bastion defense" around its own forces, as well as provide the fleet with quick and easy access to the Atlantic Ocean.

### Direct Threat to London and Copenhagen

For the United Kingdom and other NATO allies, losing control over this region poses a direct danger. If Russian troops can dominate the northern strait, the Alliance will lose the ability to effectively track the movements of Russian submarines.

Particular concern is caused by the latest developments of the Russian military-industrial complex. A potential threat is posed by hypersonic cruise missiles "Zircon," capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Moreover, Russia continues to develop the "Poseidon" underwater drone with a nuclear power plant, which is positioned as "invisible" to detection systems.

The head of the Norwegian Ministry of Defense stated that in the event of seizing control over the northern strait, the range of Russia's hypersonic weapons would cover London, Norway, and Denmark.

### Strategy of Blocking Passages

The logic of NATO's naval defense has historically been built on blocking narrow passages through which the Russian fleet can exit into the world ocean. At the moment, the Alliance effectively controls two out of three such routes:

    - The Bosphorus Strait, located at the mouth of the Black Sea.

    - The Danish Straits, closing the exit from the Baltic Sea.

The third, northern route, remains a zone of potential escalation and is not yet under full control by Western countries.

### Expanding the Conflict Beyond Ukraine

In the European Union, there is increasing concern about the possible expansion of aggression from the Kremlin. In Brussels, there are fears that the Russian leader will attempt to go beyond the Ukrainian front and increase pressure on European countries.

Earlier, Reuters reported that NATO is already working out scenarios for a possible armed confrontation with Russia on the territory of the Baltic states. In particular, the Alliance intends to strengthen its eastern flank with a new military structure that will ensure the rapid transfer of forces to Latvia and Estonia in the event of an immediate threat.
