# ASRock BC-250: How Enthusiasts Unlocked the Hidden Power of the PS5 Chip and Doubled FPS

In the world of DIY builds and custom gaming consoles, the ASRock BC-250 graphics card has already become a legend. This device, built on the AMD APU chip from the PlayStation 5, offers gamers a unique opportunity: to get a powerful platform with 16 GB of GDDR6 video memory for a bargain price. However, until recently, the potential of this card was artificially limited. Enthusiasts have found a way to remove these restrictions and unleash the true power of the chip.

### The Secret Lies in the Drivers

As noted by the well-known tech blogger ETA Prime, the standard version of the card has only 24 compute units unlocked. This is done by manufacturers to guarantee stability, as B-class chips may contain defective cores. But thanks to a driver-level patch published by user duggasco on GitHub, it became possible to activate all 40 compute units (CUs).

The modification works by changing kernel module parameters, writing data to hardware registers during GPU initialization. This is not just "turning on" hidden cores, but also changing the system's operating mode. Now the card can consume up to 125 W and operate at a frequency of 1.5 GHz, which is significantly higher than factory settings.

### Test Results: Up to 28% Boost

Enthusiasts did not rely on theory and conducted a series of tests in popular games at 1080p resolution with high graphics settings. The results exceeded expectations:

    - **Cyberpunk 2077:** performance increase was 17%, raising the average FPS from 36 to 42.

    - **Hitman 3:** the card showed an improvement of 19%, reaching 69 FPS against the standard 58.

    - **Spider-Man 2:** the most impressive result — a 28% performance increase (from 36 to 46 FPS).

    - **GTA V:** increase was 24%, providing 72 FPS.

### Risks and Conditions for Success

It should be noted that such an upgrade is not without risks. Unlocking all 40 blocks means that cores that may have been disabled due to defects are also put to work. If the chip turns out to be defective, the system may become unstable. In addition, the card's standard cooling is not designed for a frequency of 2 GHz, so it is recommended to limit it to 1.5 GHz and 900 mV voltage.

Nevertheless, for those willing to take a risk for performance, the BC-250 becomes an ideal option for a budget gaming build. The lack of need for a separate graphics card and the presence of built-in fast GDDR6 memory make this board a real hit for Linux gaming fans and custom consoles.
