# Back to Basics: Korean Contest Challenges Developers to Fit a Game on a 1.44 MB Floppy Disk

In an era where modern blockbusters take up hundreds of gigabytes, the video game industry is once again turning its attention to the limitations of the past. The Korean indie portal **2P Game Arcade** has announced the launch of a unique competition where the main task for developers will be to create a full-fledged game that fits on a standard 3.5-inch floppy disk.

### Technical Challenge: 1.44 MB

The memory limit for participants is set at 1,474,560 bytes, equivalent to the classic 1.44 MB. This is not just an abstract number, but the actual amount of data a floppy disk could hold—a medium that became a symbol of an entire era in computer history. The task seems unrealistic by modern standards, where even indie projects often require tens of gigabytes of space.

Organizers emphasize that this is a serious test of technical ingenuity. Participants must fit not only the game logic but also all necessary resources, including graphics and audio files, into this tiny volume.

### Freedom of Tool Choice

Despite the strict size limitations, the contest does not force participants to use outdated technologies. Developers are allowed to use any modern game engines, including:

- Unity

- Unreal Engine

- Godot

- GameMaker

- Custom proprietary engines

The main condition is that the final executable file, along with all runtime libraries, must weigh no more than 1.44 MB. This means that browser games and web applications cannot participate in the contest: the work must run as a standalone .exe file.

### Rules and Deadlines

The competition is focused exclusively on new projects. Any entry that work began on before the official announcement on May 26 will be rejected. Submissions will be accepted until 23:39 Korea Standard Time on September 4.

Both individuals and teams can participate. The only informal requirement for the games is that they must be fun. Organizers want to see creativity, humor, and gameplay mechanics, not just a technical experiment.

### Prize Pool

Although the contest page modestly refers to the awards as "small souvenirs," the cash prizes are quite substantial:

- First place: 720,000 South Korean won (approx. $490)

- Second place: 280,000 won (approx. $190)

- Third place: 144,000 won (approx. $98)

This challenge is not just nostalgia for retro gaming, but a call to modern developers who are used to working with massive amounts of data. The ability to create a quality product under strict constraints is a sign of true mastery.
