Scientists have completed a massive project to digitize and translate a collection of clay tablets over four thousand years old. These ancient texts, retrieved from oblivion, shed unexpected light on the daily life of the first civilizations of the Middle East. As it turns out, ancient bureaucrats cared not only about the fate of empires but also about the strict accounting of alcohol sales.

Information about the study came from the University of Copenhagen. Of particular value among the deciphered artifacts are the tablets found during excavations of the Syrian city of Hama. This city was destroyed by the Assyrian army in 720 BC. In their haste, the conquerors left behind part of the library of a large temple, where rare medical recipes and magical instructions were stored, which have now become the property of science.

The main sensation of the study was a unique anti-witchcraft ritual intended to protect the monarch. The method involved the use of a transfer effect: an exorcist molded small figures out of wax and clay, which personified enemies, and burned them throughout the night while continuously chanting spells.

Scientists were shocked to find this purely courtly Assyrian text on the border of the empire. This proves that ancient rulers used magical instructions as a real crisis management tool to maintain power even in the provinces.

### Finance and History in Clay

Cuneiform writing, which emerged about 5,200 years ago on the territory of modern Iraq and Syria, developed precisely due to the need to control complex urban systems. Ancient bureaucracy devised its own approach to resource accounting — to record absolutely every action on clay. This allowed civilizations to scale successfully.

A striking example of this was a mundane financial document found in the collection — an old and detailed receipt for beer received. This artifact served the role of a modern fiscal receipt for reporting to supervisors.

### Proof of Gilgamesh's Reality

Alongside household receipts, researchers discovered a true historical treasure — a copy of the famous "King List." The document contains a list of rulers, starting from mythical times up to the Great Flood.

The uniqueness of the Danish copy, which served as a textbook for ancient scribes, lies in the mention of the legendary King Gilgamesh. This is one of the few material proofs that the hero of humanity's most famous epic was not just a fictional character of myths, but a real historical figure who ruled in the third millennium BC.
