# Blow to Diplomacy: Lithuanian Embassy Building Damaged During Mass Attack on Kyiv

On the night of August 1, the capital of Ukraine experienced one of the largest-scale attacks in recent times. As a result of a massive strike by Russian missiles and drones, damage was sustained not only by residential areas but also by diplomatic facilities. In particular, the damaged building of the Lithuanian Embassy in Kyiv has become a symbol of the fact that in the conditions of modern warfare, international norms and diplomatic status no longer serve as a protective shield.

### Damage to the Diplomatic Mission

As reported by the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Sybyga, the Lithuanian Embassy building sustained minor damage as a result of the attack. Photos taken by witnesses show shattered glass on the entrance doors and cracks in the glazing. Despite the destruction, miraculously, no staff members of the diplomatic mission were injured.

Sybyga emphasized that the actions of the Russian side demonstrate complete disregard for international norms, in particular the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. "Russian terrorism spares no one," noted the Ukrainian minister, calling for the strengthening of air defense capabilities as the only way to stop the aggression.

### Scale of the Night Attack

The attack on Kyiv on the night of August 1 was part of a large-scale strike across all of Ukraine. According to Ukrainian authorities, Russia launched 35 missiles and 185 attack unmanned aerial vehicles against the country. The main direction of the strike was the Kyiv region, however, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Poltava regions were also subjected to shelling.

Air defense forces managed to shoot down only one ballistic missile out of the 27 launched at the capital. The remaining projectiles reached their targets, causing significant damage to infrastructure and civilian objects.

### Human Casualties and Destruction

The tragedy of the night attack did not go without casualties. As a result of the strikes, nine people were killed, and another 30 were injured, including four children. Destruction and fires were recorded in five districts of Kyiv: Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Dniprovskyi, and Pecherskyi.

Damage to buildings, including the Lithuanian Embassy, was only part of the overall destructive effect of the massive strike. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expressed solidarity with Lithuania, Ambassador Inga Stanute-Tolochkene, and all employees of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, assuring that Kyiv is ready to provide any necessary assistance in restoration.

### International Resonance

The fact of damage to the embassy building during the attack caused a wide resonance in diplomatic circles. This event once again reminds us that in the conditions of a full-scale war, even diplomatic missions are not insured against strikes. Sybyga called on the international community to realize that Russian aggression can only be stopped by force and sufficient air defense capabilities.

The events of the night of August 1 became further proof that Russia does not stop at violating international norms and continues to strike civilian objects, including diplomatic missions. This puts at risk the safety not only of Ukrainian citizens but also of representatives of foreign states working in the country.
