# Blow to exports: Ferrexpo halts sea shipments due to attacks on Odesa ports

Major Ukrainian iron ore producer Ferrexpo has decided to temporarily suspend pellet exports via sea routes. The reason is the escalation of hostilities in the Black Sea and direct attacks on the infrastructure of the Greater Odesa ports.

As reported by RBK-Ukraine, citing the company's official statement on the London Stock Exchange, the logistics corridor is currently considered inaccessible for safe cargo transportation.

### Incident with the vessel and casualties

The immediate trigger for reviewing the logistics strategy was an incident involving a cargo vessel carrying pellets. In Ukrainian waters of the Black Sea, the ship was attacked using unmanned aerial vehicles. As a result of the strike, the vessel sustained damage.

Although the ship remains afloat, the exact condition of the cargo and the integrity of the hull have not yet been determined. The tragedy was not without casualties: one crew member died.

### Economic consequences and market reaction

Ferrexpo notes that the combination of the vessel incident and the subsequent refusal of shipowners to undertake voyages has led to a complete blockage of the sea route. Currently, shipments are on hold.

Previously, the company planned to increase export volumes in the second half of 2026, however, the current situation makes these plans unfeasible in the near future. Ferrexpo has already initiated the process of contacting insurance companies to compensate for damages under existing contracts.

### Overall situation in the region

Logistics and security issues are being felt not only in Odesa but also in other regions. In Zaporizhzhia, the Metro shopping center temporarily suspended operations on August 1 due to shelling. Additionally, the Southern Mining and Beneficiation Plant has decided to temporarily halt mining and partially reduce activities, which is directly linked to the complicating conditions of sea logistics.
