# BMD-2M with 'Bereg' Module: New Life for an Outdated Platform or a 'Mass Grave' with Improved Optics?

The Russian army continues to seek ways to strengthen its airborne units, despite the obvious limitations of the Soviet-era platform. The 'High-Precision Complexes' Holding Company has officially announced the delivery of a batch of upgraded BMD-2M vehicles to the troops. The main novelty here is the 'Bereg' combat module, designed to turn a light vehicle into a formidable anti-tank tool.

### What did the modernization bring?

The creators of the new version boast a significant increase in firepower. The 'Bereg' combat module is not just a replacement for the cannon. It includes an improved sighting complex, a modern fire control system, and, most importantly, the 'Kornet' anti-tank guided missile system. Theoretically, this allows the crew to engage tanks, fortifications, and other armored vehicles at significantly greater distances than was previously possible.

In addition, the vehicles have received additional protection kits and electronic warfare systems. Press releases claim that the ergonomics and technological level of the BMD-2M are now comparable to the BMP-2M equipped with the similar 'Berezhok' module.

### Fundamental problems remain unsolved

However, behind the facade of new radars and missiles lies an old, heavily worn reality. The modernization did not address the 'inherent' flaws of the platform. The BMD-2 armor was originally designed to be light, capable of withstanding only small arms fire and small fragments. Heavy machine guns, sniper rifles, and, even more so, shaped-charge munitions penetrate it completely.

An even more critical issue remains the internal space. Narrow hatches and a cramped cabin make rapid evacuation of the crew practically impossible in the event of a fire or smoke. Mine protection also remains at a minimum level. It is precisely because of these factors that paratroopers jokingly call this vehicle a 'mass grave'.

### The cost of updates

Loss statistics eloquently speak to how effectively this equipment performs in modern conditions. As of May 2026, the Russian army has lost at least 400 BMD-2 units during the conflict in Ukraine. Supplying updated vehicles to the troops is an attempt to extend the life of an outdated platform, but physics and ballistics do not forgive design errors.
