# The “Bookland. Enigmatic” festival postponed from VDNH to spring due to security threats in Kyiv

Ukraine's largest book festival, “Bookland. Enigmatic,” which was scheduled for September 17–20, 2026, on the grounds of the Exhibition of National Economic Achievements (VDNH) in Kyiv, has been postponed to the spring. The organizers announced this in the festival's official Instagram account @bookvdng, and the news was confirmed by the Wave RBC.UA editorial team. The decision was made against the backdrop of ongoing active attacks by the Russian Federation on the Ukrainian capital, which make it impossible to hold mass events on the originally planned dates.

### Reasons for the postponement: safety first

In recent weeks, Kyiv has been subjected to systematic strikes, which significantly increases the risks of holding public events with thousands of participants. The festival organizers explicitly stated that the “security situation in the capital” was the decisive factor. According to them, the team hoped right up until the last moment to meet readers at VDNH, but the objective circumstances did not allow the original dates to be kept. Notably, until about a week ago, the event's blog had been asserting that preparations were continuing despite the attacks on the book industry and the withdrawal of a number of major participating publishers, yet over the past week the situation changed sharply.

### The organizers' position: “Not everything is up to us”

In their official statement, the festival team emphasized that they had been working on the program every day: a large book fair, new activities, and surprises were being prepared. “We were really looking forward to this meeting. We prepared the program, a large book fair, new activities and surprises. We worked on the festival daily and believed right up until the last moment that we would soon meet you at VDNH. But, unfortunately, not everything is up to us,” the organizers wrote. They also expressed regret that fans “will have to wait a little longer” and assured that the festival “will definitely take place, because there is no force capable of stopping the love for books, Ukrainian culture, and our shared desire to be together.”

### Contradictory data

In the headline of the Wave RBC.UA article, which references the organizers' statement, the wording “cancelled” is used, whereas in the post's text itself and in the quotes from the festival team the word “postpone” is consistently used — meaning the event has not been cancelled but postponed to spring 2027. The difference in terminology can affect perception: “cancellation” implies a complete termination, while “postponement” means the event is preserved within a different time window. The organizers in their statement clearly speak of a postponement rather than a cancellation, and this is the formulation that should be considered correct.

### The spring edition: a bet on scale

The organizers intend to use the extra months to strengthen the festival. According to them, during this time publishers will be able to recover from the attacks on the book industry and prepare new books, authors will finish their manuscripts, and printing houses will print fresh runs. Thus, the spring edition of “Bookland. Enigmatic” is expected to be larger, more interesting, and more substantial than the autumn version that was planned for September 2026. The specific dates for the spring edition were not announced at the time of publication.

### Audience reaction and the context of previous seasons

The news of the postponement caused disappointment among festival fans, but most reacted with understanding, acknowledging the objectivity of the reasons. For context: according to data from the general director of VDNH, cited by Interfax-Ukraine, more than 93,000 books were sold at previous seasons of “Bookland,” underscoring the event's significance for the Ukrainian book market. The festival at VDNH traditionally attracts tens of thousands of visitors and brings together publishers, authors, illustrators, and readers, making it one of the key cultural events of the autumn in the country.
