A temporary memorial installation titled Medlin Boots has been officially presented at Kyiv's Central Railway Station. The project honors the memory of American volunteer Dalton Joseph Medlin, who traveled from the United States to defend Ukraine and gave his life in battles against Russian invaders. The event has drawn public attention, serving as a powerful symbol of deep gratitude toward foreign citizens who uphold the values of freedom and justice.

### Symbolism of the Exhibit and American Tradition

The central and most poignant element of the exhibition consists of the fallen soldier's actual military boots, inside of which two cans of Coca-Cola are neatly placed. This item was chosen for a reason: within the U.S. military, there is a longstanding and touching informal tradition. Before heading out on a dangerous combat mission, service members leave items or favorite foods in their footwear that they sincerely hope to return to after completing their mission. The soda cans in Dalton's boots embody his unfulfilled hope of returning home.### Background and Heroic Path

Before arriving in Ukraine, Dalton Medlin already had experience serving as a U.S. Army veteran. In July 2022, at the age of 23, he made the firm decision to travel to the combat zone, joining the renowned Chosen Company within the Armed Forces of Ukraine. His call sign was Gimli. Tragically, on September 27, 2023, while carrying out a complex combat mission in the Donetsk region, the volunteer was killed. Due to intense and continuous shelling, it was impossible to evacuate his body at the time, meaning he was officially listed as missing in action for a long period.### Pursuit of Truth and Recognition of Valor

The prolonged uncertainty was a devastating trial for the fallen warrior's loved ones. Eventually, Dalton's family was able to legally establish the fact of his heroic death through Ukrainian courts. The soldier's father, Warren Medlin, traveled from the U.S. specifically to attend the grand opening of the installation in the Ukrainian capital. Before arriving at the station, the exhibit was featured at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War as part of the For Freedom educational exhibition, reminding visitors of the heavy price of Ukrainian independence.
