The international music competition Eurovision is preparing for a major transformation. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Canadian public broadcasting corporation CBC/Radio-Canada have officially confirmed: Canada will make its debut at the contest in 2027. This will be a historic moment — for the first time in 12 years, a new country will join the lineup, and the project's geography will expand beyond Europe and Council of Europe member states.

### Rule changes: from associate member to full participant

For a long time, participation in Eurovision was a privilege for broadcasters located in the European Broadcasting Area or members of the Council of Europe. However, in June 2026, the EBU General Assembly in Prague approved amendments to the Statute, opening the way for key partners from other regions to become full members of the organization.

CBC/Radio-Canada, which has been cooperating with the EBU since 1950 as an associate member, successfully passed the voting procedure. On June 25, 2026, the corporation received Full Member status. This decision not only grants the right to nominate performers for the contest but also opens access to closed content exchange networks (Eurovision News Exchange, Euroradio Music Exchange) and coordination mechanisms to combat disinformation. Funding for integration is ensured through targeted government allocations within the framework of the national culture promotion program.

### Logistics and participation format in 2027

Canada's debut is scheduled for May 2027 as part of the 71st contest, which will be hosted by the Republic of Bulgaria. The country won the right to host after singer Dara won with the track "Bangaranga" at the 70th anniversary contest in Vienna (Austria) in May 2026. At that time, the event's audience exceeded 130 million viewers in 35 countries.

Organizers emphasize that no privileges or simplifications are provided for the Canadian delegation:

- **Semi-finals:** The Canadian representative is not exempt from qualification and will perform in one of the two semi-final shows on equal terms.

- **National selection:** The detailed regulations and format for selecting the song and performer will be announced by CBC/Radio-Canada by the end of 2026. This was stated by the broadcaster's president, Marie-Philippe Bouchard.

### Analytics: why Canada?

The decision to include Canada is supported by engagement statistics. Eurovision Director for the EBU, Martin Green, noted that the Canadian audience traditionally demonstrates high levels of interest. At the 2026 Vienna contest, Canada entered the top three countries in the "Rest of the World" voting segment and led in ticket sales among resident countries not part of the main participant lineup.

Furthermore, Canada already has precedents of success in the contest's history: singer Celine Dion represented Switzerland in 1988 and won.
