# Catastrophic surge: Ebola outbreak in East Africa threatens to surpass the 2014 epidemic

The situation in East Africa is rapidly spiraling out of control. The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the region is approaching the critical mark of 500. According to the latest official data from the World Health Organization (WHO), there are currently 471 confirmed infections, of which 82 have resulted in death.

### Epicenter and spread of the virus

The brunt of the epidemic is being borne by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The vast majority of infections have been registered in this country. However, the virus is not stopping at the borders: the infection is actively spreading to neighboring territories. Uganda has already confirmed 19 cases, indicating the cross-border nature of the threat.

In the last 24 hours, medical personnel have recorded a sharp spike in incidence. Experts warn that without immediate intervention, the situation could worsen manifold. The epicenter of the spread of the rare Bundibugyo strain is the Ituri province in the DRC. It is from here that the virus penetrated into Uganda, creating a real threat for the entire region.

### Threat of repeating the decade-old catastrophe

Specialists are sounding the alarm: the current wave of the epidemic could turn out to be more devastating than the Ebola outbreak in West Africa that ravaged the continent more than a decade ago. Jason Asher, Director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), confirmed the reality of such a scenario during a press conference.

"Such a scale is possible," Asher stated, commenting on the risks of a large-scale epidemic recurrence. The danger is exacerbated by the lack of officially approved vaccines or specific drugs against the Bundibugyo strain. This makes the fight against the virus extremely difficult and dependent on quarantine measures and patient isolation.

### Unprecedented speed of spread

The situation is developing at an incredible speed. Back in mid-May 2026, the WHO declared an international health emergency. Just two weeks after this warning, the picture changed dramatically. The number of suspected cases in the DRC rapidly exceeded one thousand, and the number of victims reached at least 246.

According to medical organizations, such a dynamic of spread is being recorded for the first time in the history of Ebola outbreak monitoring. Experts describe the current situation as extremely alarming, pointing out that standard response protocols may not keep up with the pace of viral mutation and transmission in the region.
