The Pryluky City District Court of the Chernihiv region has delivered a verdict in a high-profile case concerning a fatal traffic accident involving a law enforcement officer. A female employee of the National Police was found guilty of violating road safety rules, which resulted in the death of a six-year-old girl, and was sentenced to 8 years in prison.

### Maximum sentence and civil liability

The court session, which concluded today, August 4, marked the culmination of criminal proceedings initiated under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The court fully supported the position of the prosecution, represented by the First Deputy Prosecutor General Viktor Logachev. The defendant was sentenced to 8 years in prison — the maximum term provided by law for this offense.

In addition to imprisonment, the court ordered the deprivation of the convicted person's right to drive motor vehicles for a period of 3 years. Civil claims by the victims were also satisfied: the former police officer was ordered to pay 6 million hryvnias in moral damages to the family of the deceased.

### Details of the tragedy: haste cost a life

The fatal incident occurred on December 10, 2025, in the city of Pryluky. Around 11:44, a policewoman, driving a service Mitsubishi Outlander, was rushing to a call regarding another traffic accident. On Vyacheslav Chernovol Street, the vehicle approached an unregulated pedestrian crossing where a woman and her six-year-old daughter were walking at that moment.

According to the case materials, at the time of the accident, only the flashing lights were activated on the vehicle; the driver did not use the special audible signal. With a speed limit of 40 km/h, the service vehicle was moving at a speed of 51–55 km/h. The driver did not slow down before the "zebra" crossing, did not yield to pedestrians, and did not take timely measures to stop.

Court expertise confirmed that the policewoman had the technical ability to avoid the collision if she had complied with traffic rules. As a result of the impact, the six-year-old girl sustained injuries incompatible with life and died on the spot. Her mother was hospitalized with bodily injuries of medium severity.

### Prosecution's position and the status of the accused

During the trial, the accused admitted her guilt only partially. The court took into account that at the time of the crime, she was an active police officer performing a service assignment; however, this circumstance did not serve as a basis for mitigating the punishment. The court did not establish any mitigating or aggravating factors other than those already considered in the verdict.

"From the beginning of the criminal proceedings, the prosecution has consistently defended a principled position — both regarding the detention of the accused and the imposition of the maximum punishment. The evidence collected and examined in court fully confirmed her guilt and the direct causal link between the committed violations and the death of the six-year-old child," the press service of the Office of the Prosecutor General stated.

Viktor Logachev, supporting the prosecution, emphasized that the status of a law enforcement officer does not exempt one from responsibility. On the contrary, it entails an increased obligation to act lawfully and safely. Previously, the National Police reported the initiation of an internal investigation into the traffic accident and suspended the involved employees from their duties.
