# China on the Brink of Disaster: Record Floods and Extreme Rainstorms Sweep the Country

China has entered one of its most challenging flood seasons in recent years. At a press conference on July 17, Wang Baoen, Deputy Minister of Water Resources, officially announced the start of the annual flood season, which traditionally lasts from late July to early August. However, this year's forecasts are particularly alarming: meteorologists expect both northern and southern regions to face abnormally high rainfall, posing a severe test for the entire disaster prevention system.

### Scale of the Threat: Alarming Figures

The situation on the ground is developing rapidly. According to Mr. Wang, since the beginning of the season, the country has experienced continuous high-intensity downpours. These have caused many medium and small rivers to overflow, flooding adjacent areas. Statistics released by the Ministry of Water Resources confirm the scale of the disaster:

    - 25 major floods have already been recorded in the country's main river basins. This means that water levels in these rivers have reached or exceeded critical threshold values.

    - Water levels in 609 rivers have exceeded the critical mark. This figure is 35% higher than the average for the same period over the last five years.

    - The situation in small and medium rivers is particularly concerning: in 97 of them, water levels have exceeded the limits for which dam and flood control systems are designed.

### Records and Extreme Conditions

The most dramatic situation has developed in 14 rivers, where the highest water levels since monitoring began have been recorded. This indicates that modern engineering structures may be unable to withstand the force of nature. According to the ministry, extreme weather phenomena will continue to exert colossal pressure on rescue services and the population in the coming weeks.

The Ministry of Water Resources of China has already warned that the country is preparing for a rainy season with "complex and serious" conditions. Authorities are calling for maximum readiness, as the density and intensity of rainfall this year go beyond normal climatic norms.
