# Explosion from Within: China Proposes a Radical Method to Protect Earth from Asteroids

The issue of protecting our planet from cosmic threats is reaching a new level. Chinese specialists have proposed and justified an original method for neutralizing large asteroids capable of causing catastrophic damage to Earth. The study, published in the authoritative journal *Space Science & Technology*, suggests abandoning conventional scenarios of surface detonation in favor of an explosion directly inside the celestial body.

The work was carried out by scientists from the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT). Their calculations show that internal impact allows for the transfer of the maximum amount of energy to the asteroid, which is critical for its complete destruction or safe deflection from a collision trajectory.

### The Mathematics of Space Defense

The effectiveness of the new method is confirmed by specific figures calculated by the researchers. To neutralize an asteroid with a diameter of about 100 meters, an explosion with a yield of 3 megatons is required. For comparison, this is equivalent to the simultaneous detonation of approximately 200 atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima.

If we are talking about smaller, but still dangerous objects measuring 50 meters, a charge with a yield of 300 kilotons would be sufficient. The key factor for success in both cases is the depth of the charge. Scientists have determined that the highest efficiency is achieved when the warhead is placed at a depth of approximately 30 meters from the surface of the asteroid.

### Technical Challenges and Conditions for Success

Despite the impressive theoretical basis, the implementation of such a plan is fraught with serious engineering challenges. The authors of the study emphasize that the method will only work provided that the threat is detected in time. This requires the development of space monitoring systems.

To carry out the mission, it is necessary to create specialized spacecraft capable of penetrating the interior of an asteroid. Their launch will require the use of heavy launch vehicles and the preparation of corresponding infrastructure. Nevertheless, this scientific work lays the foundation for future global programs to protect Earth from unpredictable threats from space.
