# Chinese accent in Ukrainian defense: from dependence to strategic diversification

![Engineer configuring a quadcopter in a lab, illustrating the development of Ukraine's defense industry and the shift towards strategic diversification.](https://xab.info/media/2026/06/06/kitaiskiy-atsent-v-ukrainskoy-oboronke-ot-zavisimosti-k-strategicheskoy-diversifikatsii/kitaiskiy-atsent-v-ukrainskoy-oboronke-ot-zavisimosti-k-strategicheskoy-diversifikatsii-1.webp)

China remains a key link in global supply chains, and for the Ukrainian defense industry, this is not just an economic reality but a matter of combat resilience. As it turns out, despite geopolitical tensions, a complete rejection of Chinese components is currently impossible — they remain the most accessible in terms of price and delivery speed.

### From mono-dependence to hybrid chains

In recent years, a gradual "geographical" shift has been observed: part of the procurement is shifting to the European Union, the USA, Taiwan, and South Korea. Ukrainian manufacturers are increasingly building hybrid supply chains to reduce critical dependence on a single market. At the same time, Chinese parts often remain the backbone due to their cost and production scale.

"China has long ceased to be just a 'factory of cheap goods'. Today it is a key manufacturing giant of the world," note at BlueBird Tech. And Ukraine is no exception here — dependence on Chinese components has become for it not just an economic risk, but a factor of survival in war.

### European partners and own production

The company XTI Engineering, specializing in complex engineering equipment in small batches, is betting on European suppliers. Their choice is dictated by proven reliability in long-term operation. Small volumes allow for easier planning of purchases and maintaining the necessary stock of components without the risk of supply disruption.

Ukraine is actively expanding international cooperation. Joint drone production is being launched abroad — in Norway, the Netherlands, Romania, Germany. The model is simple: Ukraine shares combat experience and technologies, European partners provide financing and production capacity.

### "Flamingo" missiles and the path to autonomy

The private defense sector is already producing three "Flamingo" missiles per day. But a real breakthrough is expected after the full transition of enterprises to engines of their own design. This will allow a sharp increase in production rates and reduce dependence on the import of critical nodes.

Thus, Ukraine is not abandoning China — it is learning to live with this dependence, diversifying sources and increasing its own production. The strategy is clear: not replacement, but balance. Not isolation, but integration. And most importantly — preserving the ability to fight, even when the world around is changing.
