# Chrome dominates the market, while Meta shuts down the metaverse: top tech news

The global web browser market continues to demonstrate the absolute dominance of one giant. Google Chrome is not just maintaining its leadership but expanding its influence, leaving competitors far behind. While users around the world choose the familiar interface from Google, the Meta corporation, conversely, is making a radical turn, closing its most ambitious and loss-making project.

### Absolute hegemony of Google Chrome

According to the latest data from analytics company Statcounter, Google Chrome's share in the market of browsers for personal computers has reached an impressive 74.93%. This figure confirms that more than three-quarters of PC users worldwide trust their search queries to this browser.

Competitors are fighting for the remaining niches. Second place in the global ranking is held by Microsoft Edge with a share of 9.94%, while Apple's Safari takes third place with 5.32%. Rounding out the top five are Firefox (3.81%) and Opera (1.97%).

### Situation in Ukraine: Chrome against all

In Ukraine, the situation is even more unambiguous. Here, Google Chrome is the undisputed leader, capturing 80.37% of the market. This means that every tenth user in the country uses an alternative solution.

The composition of competitors in the Ukrainian market is interesting. Opera took second place with a figure of 6.72%, which is significantly higher than its global figures. Third place is held by Firefox (4.01%). Microsoft Edge takes fourth place with a share of 3.28%, and the top five is rounded out by Yandex Browser with 3.09%.

### Mobile segment: duopoly of Chrome and Safari

In the mobile browser market, competition is even fiercer; a duopoly has effectively formed here. Google Chrome and Apple Safari together control almost 92% of the market.

Chrome confidently leads with a share of 66.41%, while Safari is used by 25.25% of mobile device users. Other players share a tiny piece of the pie: Samsung Internet (2.44%), Opera (1.62%), and UC Browser (1.11%).

### Meta shuts down the Horizon Worlds metaverse

While Google celebrates victory in the world of browsers, Mark Zuckerberg and his corporation Meta are making the decision to close one of the decade's most high-profile projects — the Horizon Worlds metaverse. The project, which was supposed to become the future of the internet, has caused colossal losses reaching $80 billion.

Support for the VR platform on Quest devices will be discontinued by mid-June. By the end of March, the app will disappear from the app store, which effectively puts a full stop to this direction for Meta.

### Rising prices for VR devices

In addition to shutting down software, Meta Platforms Inc. announced an increase in the price of its Quest VR devices. This decision is dictated by a significant increase in production costs for high-performance equipment. The changes came into effect on April 19 and affected key markets: the USA, the UK, Europe, and Japan.
