## Key Points

- Shakhtar (4 points) will host Sporting (6 points) at Stamford Bridge in the 4th round of the Champions League
- Sporting sacked Rui Borges; Tiago Fernandes was appointed interim, and Paulo Fonseca is reported by media to become permanent coach
- Sporting is undefeated in 8 matches against Ukrainian clubs (7 wins, 1 draw)
- Colombian forward Luis Suarez has 9 goals in the current Champions League and could set a club record
- Other key matches of the round: Atletico vs Bayern, Barcelona vs Aston Villa, Manchester United vs Roma

On Tuesday, November 3, and Wednesday, November 4, the matches of the fourth round of the UEFA Champions League main stage will take place. For Ukrainian fans, the central event of the matchday will be the clash between Donetsk’s Shakhtar and Sporting Lisbon, which will be held at London's Stamford Bridge — the arena where the «Miners» traditionally play their home European matches. The encounter promises to be especially intriguing: the Donetsk side will try to break a long streak of failures in confrontations with Portuguese clubs, while their opponent arrived in London amid an unexpected coaching change.

### Shakhtar vs Sporting: The Balance of Power Before the Match

After three rounds of the main stage, Arda Turan's team has earned four points and occupies 17th place in the overall standings. The «Miners» started the tournament with a high-scoring draw against PSV (1:1), then confidently beat AEK Athens 3:1, but lost to AC Milan's Inter 0:1 in the previous round. Sporting is higher — in 12th position with six points. The Lisboans started with victories over Galatasaray (3:1) and Lens (2:0), but in the third round suffered a sensational 2:3 home defeat to Austrian side LASK, which ended their four-match winning streak in the current campaign.

### Coaching Change at Sporting: Borges Leaves, Fonseca Close to Appointment

A separate and perhaps main intrigue before the match is the personnel reshuffle on the visitors' coaching bridge. Ahead of the meeting, Sporting officially terminated its cooperation with Rui Borges, who had headed the team since December 2024 and led it to the championship title in Portugal. Tiago Fernandes has been appointed interim head coach. Meanwhile, according to media reports, Paulo Fonseca — the former coach of Donetsk Shakhtar — is set to become Borges's permanent successor. Thus, the Lisboans arrived in London with a caretaker coach who has minimal time to prepare for a key European match, while the potential future mentor will watch the game from the sidelines.

### Head-to-Head History and the Hunt for Luis Suarez's Record

Head-to-head statistics are currently in favor of the Portuguese. The teams crossed paths twice in the group stage of the 2008/09 Champions League season, and Sporting won both times with a score of 1:0. Overall, the Portuguese club remains undefeated in eight matches against Ukrainian teams: seven wins and one draw. An additional threat to the «Miners» is Sporting's Colombian striker Luis Suarez, who has scored in three consecutive Champions League matches and already has nine goals in the current tournament. If he scores against Shakhtar as well, he will set a new club record for the number of scoring European matches.

### Other Key Matches of the Matchday

In addition to the London match, eight more fixtures of the fourth round will take place on Tuesday, November 3. The central event in Madrid will be the meeting between Atletico and Bayern Munich. The Bavarians started the stage by crushing Bodo/Glimt (5:0), then drew with Viking (3:3) and Arsenal (2:2). Madrid, in turn, beat Liverpool (2:1), lost to Aston Villa (0:2), and shared points with Stuttgart (1:1). Both teams have high tournament motivation: Bayern aims to approach the league leaders, while Diego Simeone's charges want to prove their ambitions in a clash against one of the favorites.

No less interesting promises to be the encounter between Barcelona and Aston Villa. After two convincing victories — over Feyenoord (5:1) and Galatasaray (4:1) — the Catalans unexpectedly lost to PSG (2:4) in the third round and will try to rehabilitate themselves in front of their home crowd. The Birmingham side approaches the trip to Catalonia in excellent form: seven points in three matches, including a rout of Fenerbahce (6:0) and victories over Brugge (3:2) and Viking (3:1). Among the other matches of the day, the fixtures Manchester United vs Roma and Villarreal vs PSG stand out, with the Parisians currently going through the main stage without losses, having defeated Slovan (6:1) and Manchester City (4:2).
