# «Crimea caught us off guard»: Former Obama advisor reveals why the US did not enter the war for Ukraine in 2014

In an interview with the Lithuanian TV channel LRT, former US National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes made a number of sensational admissions regarding the events of 2014. He confirmed that the Barack Obama administration was indeed prepared for an armed conflict with Russia to defend the Baltic states, but Ukraine was not considered a «red line» by Washington, the crossing of which would have led to war.

According to the former advisor, the White House seriously feared a repeat of the Crimean scenario involving «little green men» on the territory of Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania. Rhodes stated that if Vladimir Putin had crossed NATO borders, the US would have immediately sent its troops to engage in combat.

### Intelligence failure and lack of military plans

One of the key conclusions of the interview was the admission of an American intelligence failure. The US administration was caught off guard by the annexation of the peninsula. Officials were called to the Situation Room only after the buildings had already been seized, when Russian flags were raised over the facilities.

It is important to note that at that moment, no one in Washington even proposed a military scenario to expel Russia from Crimea. The only available tool remained sanctions, but difficulties arose there as well.

### Disagreements with Europe and the weapons mistake

The US advocated for tougher sanctions against Russia but encountered resistance from key European partners. France and Germany took a restrained position; in particular, Chancellor Angela Merkel was then defending the «Nord Stream» project. Only Poland, the UK, and the Baltic states took a decisive stance in support of sanctions.

Separately, Rhodes addressed the issue of weapons supplies. He admitted that he personally disagreed with Obama's decision to refuse Kyiv lethal weapons supplies after the war in Donbas began. However, the president at the time feared that the transfer of heavy weapons would provoke Putin to launch an immediate assault on Kyiv.

### Geopolitical shift

In conclusion, Rhodes added a remarkable detail regarding the current geopolitical situation. If in 2014 the US readiness to fight for the Baltics was absolute, then today, in his opinion, this question remains open. This indicates that strategic priorities and risk assessments in Washington have undergone significant changes over time.
