Significant personnel changes have taken place in the British government. Prime Minister Keir Starmer officially announced the appointment of Dan Jarvis as Defence Secretary. This decision was made immediately following the resignation of the previous head of the department, John Healey, who left his post less than a day ago due to disagreements over army funding.

### Priority — National Security

Announcing the appointment, the Prime Minister emphasized that the safety of the British people is his top priority. Starmer stated that the current geopolitical situation requires decisive action and readiness to respond to any threats. "My first duty is to ensure the safety of the British people, and I will always do whatever is necessary to protect our national security," the government press office quoted the politician.

The head of the Cabinet expressed full confidence in the choice of the new minister. It is expected that Jarvis will be able to strengthen London's position on the international stage and continue the course of strengthening the armed forces.

### Increase in Defence Budget

In his statement, Starmer also touched upon the financial aspects of the reform. He noted that the Labour government is ensuring the most sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War. "I am pleased to appoint Dan Jarvis as Defence Secretary as we strengthen our armed forces and respond to the growing threats facing our country," the Prime Minister added.

### From Paratrooper to Minister

The new Defence Secretary possesses impressive experience combining military service and public administration. Dan Jarvis began his career as an officer in the Parachute Regiment, where he served from 1997 to 2011. During this time, he participated in combat operations in several hotspots around the world.

Jarvis's political path began in 2011 when he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Barnsley North constituency. Later, he demonstrated managerial skills by serving as the Mayor of South Yorkshire for four years. Following the Labour victory in the 2024 elections, he joined the government, heading the security department at the Home Office.

### Context of the Appointment

Before the official announcement of Jarvis's appointment, rumors circulated in the media about four possible candidates for the post. Among the favorites was El Cairns, known for his heroic attempt to climb Everest to raise funds for veterans. However, the choice fell on Jarvis, whose experience in security and military background, in the Prime Minister's opinion, are ideally suited to address current challenges.
