# Defeat near Shakovo: How Ukrainian Defense Stopped a Massified Russian Assault in the Donetsk Region

On July 22, one of the most intense battles in recent times unfolded on the eastern front. Russian forces attempted a large-scale assault in the Donetsk region, but the operation ended in complete failure and heavy losses for the aggressor. Over the course of four hours of fierce fighting, the forces of the 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine "Azov," in close coordination with other branches of the military, repelled the attempt to breach the defense.

### Scale of the Offensive: Dozens of Vehicles

According to the "Azov" command, the enemy mobilized significant forces for the attack. The operation involved units of the 8th and 41st Combined Arms Armies, as well as the 90th Guards Tank Division. Russian columns, numbering dozens of armored vehicles, advanced from the areas of the Novoekonomichne settlement and the Vozdvizhenka village. The target of the offensive was the sector of responsibility of the 1st Corps near the village of Shakovo.

To ensure the success of the assault, the enemy employed modern means of destruction. The skies over the battlefield were controlled by "Gerber" and "Lancet" attack drones, while fire support was provided by crews of the "Tornado-S" multiple launch rocket system.

### Tactics of Ukrainian Defense: Mines and Aviation

Ukrainian forces had prepared in advance to meet the mechanized columns. Mine and explosive barriers were installed at key approaches to the positions, while tactical aviation of the Ukrainian Air Force struck bridge crossings, blocking the enemy's routes of advance.

Attempts by Russian military personnel to restore crossings using pontoon equipment also failed — the floating structures were promptly destroyed by aviation. As a result, the mechanized columns found themselves blocked on the approaches to the positions.

### Outcome of the Battle: Enemy Losses and Coordinated Actions

A comprehensive strike against the advancing forces was delivered using barrel artillery, MLRS, and attack drones. According to official data, Ukrainian forces eliminated 123 enemy servicemen and wounded another 29. The assault was completely repelled.

The success of the operation was the result of the coordinated work of various units. In repelling the attack, not only the fighters of the 1st Corps of the National Guard "Azov" participated, but also the Center for Special Operations "A" of the SBU, Unmanned Systems Forces, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as units of the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GRU) and other structures of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

"Azov" units have been holding this strategically important section of the defense since August 2025. Previously, in October of the same year, the corps had already demonstrated high combat readiness, repelling a large-scale offensive near Dobropillya, where the enemy threw more than 16 units of heavy armored vehicles into the fight.
