# Digital ID in Max Messenger: How Check-in at Russian Hotels Will Change from 2026

Starting September 1, 2026, new rules for hotel check-ins will come into effect in Russia. Large hotels with more than 50 rooms will be required to offer guests the option to register without paper documents, using a digital ID in the Max messenger. This was announced by the Minister of Economic Development, Maxim Reshetnikov, during a meeting with representatives of the hotel industry.

### New Requirements for Hotels

The essence of the innovation is that having a physical passport, foreign passport, or driver's license will no longer be a mandatory condition for check-in at large hotels. If a tourist does not have paper documents with them, hotel staff must accept the digital ID.

The procedure is maximally simplified: the guest opens the Max app, selects the digital ID section, and shows the hotel employee a special barcode. Scanning the code confirms identity and completes the registration process.

### Saying Goodbye to Paperwork

The digital registration feature in the Max messenger was introduced back in the spring of this year. The technology is designed to completely eliminate the need to fill out paper forms, which were traditionally completed at the reception. This significantly speeds up the check-in process and increases comfort for travelers.

The new rules are already in effect and apply specifically to large hotels, which will first optimize the operations of popular hotels in tourist centers and major cities.
