# Diplomatic Battle in Versailles: How Europe is Trying to Convince Trump Not to Abandon Ukraine

In the run-up to the G7 summit in Versailles, European leaders are preparing for a complex diplomatic game. The main objective of the meeting for France and its partners is to convince US President Donald Trump that Ukraine is currently in a winning position. The strategy of European diplomats is built on keeping the American leader engaged in the discussion about the war and preventing any deterioration of his stance towards Kyiv.

### Ukraine as a "Winner": New Argumentation

According to information obtained by Politico from five French officials, the success of the summit will be measured not so much by the signing of major agreements, but by maintaining US engagement in the conflict. A key element of persuasion will be demonstrating that Ukraine has gained an advantage on the battlefield.

A French diplomat, who wished to remain anonymous, pointed to Donald Trump's psychological profile: "Trump loves winners." Unlike last year, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not have strong cards to play, the situation has changed dramatically. As evidence of Kyiv's strength, Europeans cite:

    - An European Union credit of 90 billion euros;

    - Significant difficulties for the Russian army on the front lines;

    - Developing defense cooperation between Kyiv and Gulf countries.

A representative of French President Emmanuel Macron's administration emphasized the financial reality: "Europeans are paying for almost 100% of the aid to Ukraine. It is important that other G7 partners, especially the US, at least do not worsen their position towards Ukraine".

### Diplomacy in Versailles: From Compromises to Personal Meetings

To maintain the favor of the American leader, the French side has made a number of concessions and gestures of attention. In particular, the date of the summit was adjusted so that it does not coincide with Trump's birthday. At the end of the official events at the Palace of Versailles, a ceremonial dinner is planned for the US President.

Officials note that regular phone calls between leaders indicate an improvement in relations after a period of tension. Diplomats believe that Emmanuel Macron's direct and ambitious style is ideally suited for interacting with Trump, with whom the French leader already has experience of working together during his first presidential term.

### Iran Issues and Prospects for a Ceasefire

While Ukraine remains an important agenda item, the key topic of the summit, according to unnamed French sources, will be the conflict between the US and Israel with Iran, as well as the tense situation around the Strait of Hormuz.

Nevertheless, the topic of the Russo-Ukrainian war will not be forgotten. Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated his intention to discuss with Donald Trump the possibility of a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. Thus, the summit in Versailles is turning into an arena where the fate not only of the Ukrainian front but also of global geopolitical stability is being decided.
