## Key Points

- Dirk Kuyt appointed interim head coach of Fenerbahce.
- Ismail Kartal resigned following a 1:2 defeat against Galatasaray.
- Fenerbahce sits fifth in the Turkish championship after nine rounds.
- The club will face Liverpool in the Champions League on November 4.

Former Liverpool and Netherlands national team forward Dirk Kuyt has been appointed interim head coach of Turkish club Fenerbahce. The 46-year-old specialist replaced Ismail Kartal, who left his position following a series of disappointing results for the team in the national championship.

### Managerial Changes and Reasons for Resignation

The decision to change the coaching staff was made by the Istanbul club's management following a defeat in the crucial ninth-round match of the Turkish championship against Galatasaray with a score of 1:2. In that encounter, Victor Osimhen scored a brace for the opponents in the 29th and 44th minutes, while Irfan Kahveci's goal in the second half failed to rescue a draw for Fenerbahce. After the match, Ismail Kartal apologized to the supporters for the poor performance in the first half, after which the club announced the termination of cooperation with the coach.

### Familiarity with the Club and Kuyt's Coaching Experience

Dirk Kuyt joined Fenerbahce's coaching staff in June 2026 as an assistant head coach and will now temporarily manage the team until a permanent manager is appointed. The Istanbul club is well known to the Dutch specialist, as he defended its colors as a player from 2012 to 2015 after transferring from Liverpool. As a head coach, Kuyt previously worked with Dutch clubs ADO Den Haag and Dordrecht, as well as Belgian side Beerschot.

### Standings and Upcoming Challenges

Currently, after nine played rounds of the Turkish championship, Fenerbahce occupies fifth place in the standings, trailing league leaders Galatasaray by six points. The team will play its next match under the new interim head coach on October 31 against Goztepe as part of the tenth round of the Super Lig. Furthermore, a major test for the Dutch specialist will be the upcoming Champions League fixture on November 4 against Liverpool, a club where he played from 2006 to 2012.

### Team Prospects in the Turkish Super Lig and European Competitions

The appointment of Dirk Kuyt is intended to shake up the team ahead of a dense schedule of decisive matches both domestically and in European tournaments. The club's management expects that the former forward's authority and knowledge of club specifics will help players overcome the psychological crisis following the derby defeat. The coming weeks will show whether the interim staff can stabilize Fenerbahce's results and reduce the gap to the leading group in the championship.
