The National Bank of Ukraine has set the official exchange rates for Wednesday, July 8. Compared to the previous day, the US dollar has slightly decreased in value, while the euro, conversely, showed growth.

### Official Exchange Rates for July 8

The NBU set the US dollar exchange rate at 44.50 hryvnias. This is a decrease of 6 kopecks compared to the rate on the current day. The European currency is moving in the opposite direction: the euro rate rose by 2 kopecks and now stands at 50.88 hryvnias.

### The Path to the Euro: Myths and Reality

The question of potentially replacing the national currency with the euro remains one of the most discussed topics in the context of Ukraine's accession to the European Union. However, experts emphasize that this process cannot be instantaneous even after official membership.

Sergei Mamedov, Vice President of the Association of Ukrainian Banks and Chairman of the Board of Globus Bank, noted in a podcast on the Finance.ua YouTube channel that the transition requires serious preparation. First and foremost, it is necessary to stabilize the economy, bring inflation under control, and align banking regulation with European Union standards.

Even after joining the EU, the country will not be able to immediately abandon the hryvnia. Ukraine must go through the special currency mechanism ERM II, which checks the stability of the national currency in relation to the euro. This period must last a minimum of two years.

"Today we are not yet talking about the imminent replacement of the hryvnia with the euro. We are talking about the foundation, without which such conversations would have no practical sense at all," Mamedov explained.

### When Will the Discussion on Transition Begin?

According to the banker, practical discussions on switching to the euro may not begin earlier than 3–4 years after the end of the war or the cessation of its active phase. This is a long-term perspective that requires time and effort.

Nevertheless, Ukraine is already moving towards financial Euro-integration. An important step will be joining SEPA — the Single Euro Payments Area. This will make money transfers for Ukrainians faster and will significantly simplify settlements with European partners for businesses.

"But the transition from the hryvnia to the euro is a long-term perspective," Mamedov concluded.
