On Thursday, August 6, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) set official exchange rates, which showed divergent trends. The US dollar decreased slightly in value, while the euro continued to rise. These changes reflect the current situation in the foreign exchange market and the influence of external factors on the national currency.

### Official exchange rates: dollar and euro

According to NBU data, the official exchange rate of the US dollar was 44.68 hryvnias, which is 6 kopecks less than the previous banking day (44.74 UAH). The decline in the dollar's rate may be related to various factors, including changes in the international economic situation and the internal policy of the NBU.

In contrast, the euro became more expensive. The official rate of the European currency was set at 51.62 hryvnias, which is 9 kopecks higher than on Wednesday (51.53 UAH). The rise in the euro may indicate the strengthening of this currency's position in the global market or a change in demand from Ukrainian importers and exporters.

### The role of cash transactions in Ukraine's financial system

Despite the active development of non-cash transactions, cash remains an important part of Ukraine's financial system. This was stated by Vice President of the Association of Ukrainian Banks and Chairman of the Board of 'Globus Bank', Serhiy Mametov, in a podcast.

'During power outages, communication disruptions, or problems with payment infrastructure, it is cash that performs the role of a reserve means of payment,' noted the banker. This highlights the importance of cash as a tool that allows citizens and businesses to continue operating even in conditions of instability.

### Factors of hryvnia stability

According to Mametov, the stability of the national currency is determined not by the denomination of the largest banknote, but by a number of other factors. These include the level of inflation, the state of the economy, budget balance, the rhythm of international aid, the volume of foreign exchange reserves, and the effectiveness of the NBU's monetary policy.

'The stability of the hryvnia will depend not on the denomination of the largest banknote, but on the level of inflation, the state of the economy, budget balance, the rhythm of international aid, the volume of foreign exchange reserves, and the effectiveness of the NBU's monetary policy,' explained Mametov.

### 2000 hryvnia banknote: cause or effect?

Mametov also emphasized that the appearance of a banknote with a higher denomination does not affect inflation in itself. 'The 2000 hryvnia banknote is not the cause of inflation. It is a consequence of economic changes that have already occurred. This is a technical and economically justified decision that should make cash circulation cheaper, more convenient, and more sustainable,' he concluded.

Thus, the introduction of a new banknote is aimed at improving conditions for cash transactions and increasing the efficiency of the financial system, rather than creating additional inflationary risks.
