# Dollar Hits Records: NBU Raises Rate to Maximum, but There's a Way to Profit from the Hryvnia

The Ukrainian currency market is showing dynamics again: the National Bank has fixed a new historical maximum for the American currency. If you are following the exchange rate, you have noticed that the dollar is steadily moving up, and the euro is not lagging behind its competitor. But is it worth panicking and buying currency in a rush? Experts see the situation differently.

### New figures: dollar and euro at the peak

On Thursday, May 28, the regulator set the official exchange rate of the dollar at 44.30 hryvnias. This is a slight, but symbolically important increase of 3 kopecks compared to the previous day. The euro also increased by exactly the same amount — now one European coin costs 51.54 hryvnias. Both currencies are moving in the same direction, confirming the strengthening trend.

### Why is the hryvnia holding? The high rate factor

Despite the rise in the exchange rate, the market remains stable. The key role here is played by the tight monetary policy of the NBU. The Central Bank kept the refinancing rate at 15%, and this decision works as an anchor for the hryvnia.

Taras Lesovoy, Director of the Financial Markets Department of "Globus Bank", explains the mechanism simply: a high rate makes hryvnia deposits extremely attractive. While the exchange rate of currencies is rising, interest rates on bank deposits are reaching 16–17.5% per annum (including promotions).

### The math of profitability: why a deposit is better than cash

Let's calculate. Even if you subtract the projected inflation (about 9.4%) and the tax on deposit income, the real net earnings for the depositor will be 3–4%. This is a real plus that cannot be obtained by simply keeping dollars under the pillow.

Today shows that for many Ukrainians, the strategy of "buying currency just in case" is giving way to a more rational approach. Hryvnia deposits are turning into a clear and profitable tool for preserving capital, allowing not only to protect money from inflation but also to increase them.
