A new drone incident occurred in the Romanian port of Constanța, triggering an immediate response at the highest levels of the European Union. EU leaders linked the series of incidents in Romania to Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and reaffirmed their full solidarity with their neighbor.

### Direct Threat on the EU Border

European Council President António Costa, in his statement, emphasized that the drone explosion in Constanța marked the third major security incident in Romania in recent weeks. According to him, these events are a direct consequence of Russian aggression.

Costa condemned repeated violations of the airspace of member states and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to ensuring the security of all Union countries. He also pledged full support to Romania in the current situation.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in her post on social network X, noted that the sea drone reached Constanța port just one week after another drone crashed into a residential building in Galați. She called this a direct consequence of the war and pointed out that the threat is becoming increasingly real for countries on Europe’s eastern border.

### Incident Details and Consequences

In the night of May 29, a Russian “Geran-2” drone (analogous to the Iranian “Shahed”) attacked a high-rise building in Galați. The strike caused a fire on the tenth floor, injuring two people. The Romanian Air Force reported that physically intercepting the target was impossible: only four minutes passed from detection to the drone’s impact.

Today’s incident in Constanța port also had consequences, although no casualties were reported. During the inspection, three additional boats containing explosives were found in the waters, which failed to detonate. The Romanian Ministry of National Defense has already established the factual circumstances of the event.

### Europe’s Response: Investments and the SAFE Program

Ursula von der Leyen stressed that the EU’s response must match the urgency of the situation. She reminded that Europe is already massively investing in the development of anti-drone systems, air defense capabilities, and early warning systems.

Special attention was given to the SAFE program, which, according to the head of the European Commission, will help build a stronger Romania and, consequently, a stronger Europe. Von der Leyen stated that solidarity with every member state facing such threats is absolute.
