# Economic Ultimatum: Putin Warns Armenia of 14% GDP Loss

Geopolitical tensions in the Caucasus have reached a critical point. Vladimir Putin has outlined harsh conditions for Yerevan: attempting to combine membership in the Eurasian Economic Union with a pro-European course will result in the effective destruction of Armenia's economy. The Kremlin has moved from diplomatic statements to direct threats of rolling back integration processes.

### The Price of Geopolitical Choice

The Russian leader did not resort to ambiguous formulations. According to him, combining participation in the EAEU and joining the EU is "practically impossible" right now. In response to Yerevan's push for European integration, Moscow is prepared to completely halt economic cooperation. This means not just a cooling of relations, but a systemic blow to the Armenian market.

Putin warned that the days of preferential treatment from Russia are numbered. Expert assessments cited by the Kremlin head are alarming: Armenia risks losing at least 14% of its GDP. This is a colossal figure capable of destabilizing the country on the eve of important political events.

### From Words to Actions: Food Embargo

Threats are already turning into reality. Russia has begun fulfilling its promises by imposing sanctions on Armenian exports. As of May 30, Rosselkhoznadzor introduced temporary restrictions on the import of certain food products. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, greens, and strawberries were hit. For Armenia's agricultural sector, which is oriented towards the Russian market, this became a serious signal.

### Pressure from Allies and Election Fever

Yerevan found itself under pressure. Leaders of partner countries in the CSTO and EAEU — the presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan — are demanding that Armenia hold a nationwide referendum to determine its geopolitical vector as soon as possible. Moscow is categorically opposed to Yerevan's rapprochement with the West and is ready to expand the list of threats, including the cancellation of preferential supplies of gas, petroleum products, and diamonds.

The situation is complicated by the upcoming parliamentary elections on June 7. Amidst pressure from Moscow, Yerevan is receiving support from Washington: US President Donald Trump openly supported incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which only exacerbates the confrontation between global players on the territory of a small country.
