# El Niño intensifies: WMO warns of global climate disasters and record heat

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a worrying forecast: the El Niño climate phenomenon is rapidly intensifying and is expected to drastically alter weather conditions across the globe in the coming months. Experts from the UN agency warn of a sharp increase in the risk of extreme weather events — ranging from prolonged heatwaves and droughts to massive floods.

### Global overheating and disruption of cycles

According to expert assessments, the sea surface temperature in the central Pacific Ocean could exceed the norm by more than 2.9°C. Such significant warming has the potential to disrupt familiar atmospheric cycles and act as a catalyst for further increases in the Earth's average temperature.

The Organization forecasts that temperatures will exceed average levels on almost all continents. The most significant warming is expected in the following regions:

- Africa;

- Southern Europe;

- The Indian subcontinent;

- East Asia;

- South America.

The WMO's warning comes against the backdrop of already occurring catastrophic events: massive wildfires are raging in several countries in Africa and Europe, while South Asia is suffering from destructive monsoon rains.

### UN calls to action

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on states to accelerate the fight against climate change. According to him, the key factor deepening the crisis remains the use of fossil fuels; therefore, it is necessary to abandon the launch of new coal, oil, and gas extraction projects.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo emphasized that forecasts alone are insufficient to save lives. In her view, early warnings must become the basis for concrete decisions by governments and humanitarian services.

"Forecasts themselves do not prevent danger — people do. The decisions we make today will determine the consequences we will face tomorrow," Saulo concluded.

### Regional consequences: from Europe to Ukraine

The impact of global climate shifts is already being felt at the national level. In the United Kingdom, heat-related mortality is approaching record levels.

Abnormal weather is also expected in Ukraine. The first weekend of August will be hot and predominantly dry. In the western regions of the country, air temperatures will locally reach +35...+37°C, while most regions are forecast to see +27...+34°C.
