# Elon Musk vs. ZDF: How a Report on Belfast Led to a Legal Threat and Retraction

A major conflict has erupted in the world of media and technology between Elon Musk, owner of the social network X (formerly Twitter), and the German public broadcaster ZDF. The trigger for the confrontation was a news segment that attributed calls for violence and a "hunt for migrants" to the billionaire. The situation quickly escalated from a news story into a legal debate, ending with the channel being forced to admit its mistake.

### The Segment That Sparked the Conflict

It all began on June 12, 2026, when a half-hour report aired on ZDFheute live, the digital news program of the channel. Journalists covered xenophobic riots that had broken out in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Tensions in the city peaked following an incident where a citizen of Sudan was accused of a knife attack on a local resident.

In the preview and introduction to the segment, the program host used emotionally charged wording, stating that a "racist mob staged a hunt for migrants." Furthermore, the journalist directly linked these actions to calls by British far-right activist Tommy Robinson and "tech millionaire Elon Musk".

### Facts vs. Interpretation

The assertion by the German journalists proved to be untrue. While Elon Musk did draw his followers' attention to the situation in Belfast, his actions did not contain calls for violence or the persecution of people.

The billionaire reposted a publication by Tommy Robinson and British politician Rupert Lowe, accompanying it with a comment for his audience of 240 million: "Only if we protest LOUDLY and REPEATEDLY will something change!!". It was this phrase, calling for active protests, that the ZDF editorial team interpreted as a direct call for a "hunt," which became the basis for the accusations.

### Reaction and Legal Pressure

Conservative journalist Julian Reichelt was the first to point out the inaccuracy of the German media, calling the segment propaganda. Elon Musk supported the criticism and stated in his account that legal action would be taken against ZDF for "monstrous lies." The billionaire promised to find out in court exactly who wrote this text.

Musk's words did not remain at the level of threats. His lawyer, Joachim Steinhöfel, sent the channel an official demand to cease unlawful actions. Under pressure from legal expertise, the ZDF management made concessions.

### Outcome: Admission of Error

As a result of the conflict, the channel was forced to remove the disputed fragment from the program's introduction. A disclaimer appeared on the ZDF website, in which the wording regarding Musk's calls was deemed "inaccurate and misleading." Later, the channel's portal posted a notice stating that part of the introductory speech had been cut "for legal reasons".

This case became a vivid example of how a social network can become a tool for protecting reputation, as well as demonstrating the risks traditional media face when working with fast-moving news agendas in the age of digital technology.
