# Emergency power outages in Kyiv and regions: how heat and the aftermath of strikes are hitting Ukraine's power system

On Friday, July 3, emergency power outage schedules were introduced in most of Ukraine. Residents of Kyiv, as well as the Kyiv, Chernihiv, Odesa, and Cherkasy regions, were left without electricity. The causes were extreme heat, network overload, and infrastructure damage resulting from Russian attacks.

### Heat and shelling: a double blow to the power system

The situation in Ukraine's power system remains tense. According to Ukrenergo, DTEK, and regional power companies, outages were implemented by dispatcher order due to critical load on the networks.

In the Odesa region, the problem is exacerbated not only by abnormally high temperatures but also by damaged equipment that cannot transmit a sufficient amount of electricity. Authorities are urging the population to use resources economically.

### Outage schedules: what is known now

Unlike previous days, when hourly schedules were in effect, on Friday the outages are of an emergency nature. This means they are introduced locally and may last for varying amounts of time depending on the state of the networks.

Ukrenergo clarified that restrictions will be lifted immediately after the situation stabilizes. However, given the constant Russian strikes on energy infrastructure, it is difficult to predict the duration of the interruptions.

### From Sumy to Donetsk: where the focus of problems has shifted

While the Sumy region was previously considered the most affected by power cuts, the most difficult situation is now observed in the Donetsk region. Constant enemy shelling leads to regular damage to power lines and substations.

In Kyiv, following another massive attack, part of the city was left without power. Energy workers have already begun emergency restoration work to restore electricity supply to consumers as quickly as possible.

### What should residents do?

Experts recommend:

- Monitor official messages from local energy companies.

- Prepare backup power sources (generators, batteries).

- Save electricity by turning off unnecessary appliances.

- Check for the availability of water and food in case of prolonged outages.

The situation in Ukraine's power system remains dynamic. It is important to remain calm and act in accordance with the authorities' recommendations.
