The world of wearable electronics is preparing for a serious transformation. If smart rings and watches have so far been limited to step counting and heart rate monitoring, a new development by scientists promises to take personal medicine to a fundamentally different level. Researchers have created a prototype smart ring capable of analyzing the body's biochemical composition in real-time without the need for blood draws.

### From Pulse to Body Chemistry

Modern commercial gadgets, such as the Oura Ring or Whoop, focus on physical parameters: body temperature, sleep quality, and physical activity. The new device changes the paradigm, moving from physiology to biochemistry. The ring is capable of simultaneously tracking the concentration of six key substances:

- Glucose;

- Ketones;

- Vitamin C (ascorbic acid);

- Uric acid;

- Lactic acid;

- Ethanol.

The key feature of the technology lies in the method of data acquisition. For analysis, sweat is used, which is extracted through the skin via a passive osmotic process. This completely eliminates the need for painful finger or vein pricks, making monitoring absolutely painless.

### A Microscopic Laboratory on Your Finger

Inside the compact ring casing are miniature biosensors capable of detecting the slightest changes in the chemical composition of sweat. The energy heart of the device is a flexible battery based on silver oxide and zinc. The design also includes electronics for signal processing and wireless transmission to a smartphone.

Developers have tried to ensure a balance between functionality and autonomy. A single battery charge is sufficient for approximately 12 hours of continuous operation. An important advantage is the durability of calibration: after individual setup, measurement accuracy is maintained for two months.

### Practical Testing

The effectiveness of the new gadget was tested in real-world conditions. Researchers tested the device in various everyday scenarios, paying special attention to glucose and ketone level control. The test results were promising: the ring's readings demonstrated high agreement with data from professional commercial glucometers and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems.

Testing was conducted on two groups of volunteers — healthy individuals and patients with type 1 diabetes. In both cases, the device showed stable performance, confirming its potential applicability for medical purposes.

### Prospects for Personal Medicine

According to the creators, this technology marks a new stage in the development of medicine. If current wearable devices merely state facts (e.g., "heart rate is elevated"), biochemical sensors are capable of explaining the reasons behind what is happening by tracking changes at the molecular level.

At present, the smart ring remains a laboratory prototype. Researchers have not yet announced the timeline for commercial launch or the start of mass production, however, the device's potential to turn every user into their own lab technician is obvious.
