Receiving a bill with an inflated amount or unclear charges is a situation many Ukrainians face. Instead of paying an incorrect amount or getting into endless disputes, lawyers recommend following a clear algorithm. Elena Voronkova, a lawyer at the Ivan Homych Law Firm, explained to RBC-Ukraine how to properly react to calculation errors and protect your rights.

### Step one: verifying submitted data

Before accusing the supplier of fraud or a technical error, you must rule out human error. The most common cause of inflated bills is the untimely or incorrect submission of meter readings. If you forgot to report the data or did so with a delay, the supplier has the right to charge based on average consumption or the standard rate, which often leads to overpayment.

In this case, the solution is elementary: you must submit the correct readings as soon as possible. The supplier is obliged to recalculate the amount and make changes in the following month, crediting the difference towards future payments.

### Step two: official application for recalculation

If you are sure you submitted the data correctly, but the amount in the bill still raises questions, you cannot ignore it. Elena Voronkova emphasizes: in this case, the consumer should contact the supplier with an official application for recalculation.

The key rule to remember: the application must be exclusively in writing. Verbal complaints, calls to the call center, or conversations with a dispatcher do not leave a legally significant trace. The company is obliged to provide an official response to a written application, which will serve as evidence of your actions in case of further proceedings.

### How to record the fact of application

Submitting an application requires observing certain formalities so that the document is not "lost" in clerical routine. Lawyers offer two reliable ways to record your request:

    - **Sending via "Ukrposhta":** This is the safest method. The application should be sent by registered mail with a return receipt. This document will be irrefutable evidence that the supplier was notified of the problem on a specific date.

    - **Personal submission:** If you prefer to take the documents to the company's office personally, it is critical to receive confirmation of receipt. This can be a stamp of acceptance on your copy of the application with an incoming number, date, and employee signature, or a receipt from the office.

Compliance with these simple rules allows you to move a domestic conflict into the legal field, where the consumer has every chance to recover overpaid funds.
