Estonian authorities have begun a major reinforcement of their borders, implementing specialized systems for the detection and monitoring of unmanned aerial vehicles. Stationary means are being deployed in areas adjacent to Russia and Latvia as part of a long-term plan to enhance security. According to the Estonian Ministry of the Interior, the completion of all work is scheduled for the end of 2026.

### First stage: the south-eastern frontier

According to a press release from the Ministry of the Interior published on May 30, the first stationary devices have already been installed and are operational. They are located on three key sections of the land border in the south-east of the country. The territory covers the zone between the Luhamaa border crossing point and the point where the borders of Estonia, Latvia, and Russia meet.

The Head of the Estonian Ministry of the Interior, Igor Tarro, confirmed that this is just the beginning of a large-scale process. In his statement, he noted that the country is moving towards creating a unified drone monitoring network that will eventually cover the entire territory of Estonia.

"Recent drone incidents show that we assessed the risks very realistically when planning our capabilities and made decisions carefully," the minister emphasized.

### Work schedule and current situation

Construction and procurement of the necessary equipment are proceeding according to plan, and in some cases even ahead of schedule. In those border sectors where stationary systems have not yet been installed, law enforcement agencies are using mobile monitoring means to ensure security.

Full equipment of all land border sections is planned to be completed by the end of 2026. This should create a continuous protection loop against aerial threats.

### Context: rise in drone activity in the Baltics

The strengthening of security measures is taking place against the backdrop of regular drone incidents in the airspace of the Baltic states. The situation intensified in May 2024, when several cases of intrusion by unidentified objects were recorded.

On May 19, NATO fighters — Romanian F-16s — shot down a drone over Estonian territory. The country's Minister of Defence, Hanno Pevkur, called this the first such case in the history of Estonian aviation.

A few days earlier, on May 17, a similar situation occurred in neighboring Latvia. After an unidentified drone entered the airspace of the republic, NATO aircraft were scrambled. The drone soon left the territory, but the Latvian Armed Forces warned that such incidents remain possible against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

On the same day, a fallen drone was discovered in Lithuania, in the Utena district, near the borders with Belarus and Latvia. At the same time, representatives of the Lithuanian military stated that their radars did not record the flight of drones over the country, which indicates difficulties in tracking low-observable targets.
