# Eternal energy source: British scientists create a diamond battery from nuclear waste

British scientists have made a breakthrough in the field of alternative energy by developing a device capable of operating continuously for millennia. A team of researchers from the University of Bristol created a so-called diamond battery that harnesses the energy from the natural decay of radioactive elements.

### Technology from waste

The development is based on the principle of betavoltaics. Scientists used spent graphite blocks, which accumulate at decommissioned nuclear power plants, as the basis. When these blocks are heated, radioactive carbon-14 concentrated on their surface is released as a gas.

This gas is collected and processed under extreme temperatures and pressures, transforming it into synthetic diamonds. This approach solves two major global challenges at once: it significantly reduces the radioactivity of the original graphite blocks, making their storage cheaper, and creates a unique raw material for long-lasting energy sources.

### Design and safety

The resulting diamonds, consisting of carbon-14, remain radioactive themselves and emit beta particles (electrons). To ensure safety and efficiency, the system has a two-layer structure:

- **Inner layer:** A radioactive crystal that generates energy.

- **Outer layer:** A standard non-radioactive synthetic diamond.

The outer shell completely absorbs the internal radiation, making the device safe for humans. Simultaneously, it acts as an additional semiconductor, increasing the system's efficiency (COP) to nearly 100%. Scientists emphasize that the radiation level on the surface of such a battery is lower than the natural radiation background of a regular banana.

### Eternal operation and applications

The key advantage of the technology is the half-life of carbon-14, which is 5,730 years. This means the device can operate without recharging or replacement longer than many human civilizations have existed.

However, due to low current density, these batteries are not suitable for powering energy-intensive devices such as smartphones or electric vehicles. Their niche lies in fields requiring long-term autonomy with minimal energy consumption in extreme conditions where battery replacement is impossible or dangerous.

The prospects for applying the technology are broad: ranging from spacecraft and deep-sea research stations to medical implants, such as pacemakers, and sensors for hard-to-reach areas.
