The Council of the European Union has decided to extend economic sanctions against Russia for another year. According to the official statement, the restrictive measures will remain in force at least until July 31, 2027. This decision was the outcome of a meeting of the European Council held on June 18-19, 2026, where the leaders of the bloc's member states reached a consensus on the need to continue pressure on the Russian economy.

### History and scale of restrictions

In its press release, the EU Council recalled that the history of anti-Russian sanctions began back in 2014. However, following the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the scale of restrictions was radically revised. Since then, the European bloc has adopted 20 packages of sanctions directed against the aggressor state. The current decision to extend confirms Brussels' unwavering course on isolating key sectors of the Russian economy.

### Key areas of impact

Existing restrictive measures target fundamental industries that ensure the functioning of the Russian economy. In particular, the following sectors have been hit:

- Trade and logistics;

- Financial sector;

- Energy;

- Dual-use technologies.

One of the most painful restrictions remains the ban on the maritime import of Russian crude oil and certain petroleum products into EU countries. Furthermore, financial institutions, providers of crypto services in the Russian Federation and third countries, as well as Russian propaganda media operating within the EU, have also fallen under restrictions.

### Preparation of the 21st sanctions package

In parallel with the extension of current measures, the European Commission has announced details of the 21st sanctions package. This document provides for new restrictions on Russian companies and citizens, including stricter rules for entry into European states. The new package will also affect the financial sector and operations with crypto assets.

Special attention in the new measures is paid to trade. For the first time, the Russian fishing industry is planned to be included in the sanctions list, which will mark a new stage in economic pressure on Moscow.

### EU Position

The EU Council emphasized that the bloc will maintain existing measures and is ready to take additional steps as long as Russia continues its illegal actions. The statement specifically noted the violation of fundamental norms of international law, including the prohibition on the use of force. Thus, the extension of sanctions until 2027 is a signal of Europe's readiness for a long-term confrontation.
