# EU Economic Shield for Armenia: Tariff Cancellation and Aid Against Pressure

The European Union has adopted unprecedented measures to support Armenia's economy, aiming to protect Yerevan from external pressure. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen officially announced a comprehensive aid package, which includes both financial injections and a radical change in trade conditions.

### Abolition of tariffs on Armenian exports

A key element of Brussels' new strategy is the cancellation of import duties on almost 80% of goods exported from Armenia. This decision aims to open direct access to the EU market for Armenian producers, making their products more competitive.

The duty-free regime covers a wide range of product categories, which is particularly important for the agricultural sector and light industry. The list includes:

- Fresh vegetables and fruits;

- Gardens and plants;

- Alcoholic beverages;

- Non-alcoholic beverages.

### Financial support and expert assistance

In addition to trade preferences, the EU has allocated €18 million to Armenia. This amount represents the final tranche of a previously announced financial support package totaling €52 million. The funds are intended to stabilize the economic situation in the country.

However, assistance is not limited to just money. Brussels will send a group of special experts to Armenia. Their task is to practically help local entrepreneurs master European standards and establish logistics to expand product supplies to the continent.

### Response to economic pressure

Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that these steps are a direct response to the situation surrounding the republic. "I know that Armenia is still experiencing significant economic pressure from Russia. But rest assured: when pressure on our partners intensifies, the EU activates its actions. You can count on us," declared the head of the European Commission.

The new measures are designed to create an "economic shield" capable of mitigating the consequences of Moscow's actions. Previously, Russia has repeatedly expressed disagreement with Armenia's pro-European integration course. In particular, Yerevan received threats of terminating preferential supplies of gas, oil products, and diamonds.

Against this backdrop, Russian leader Vladimir Putin stated that the question of Armenia's possible accession to the EU should be resolved by holding a referendum. At the same time, the authorities in Yerevan have already announced their intention to begin the official path to EU membership, making Brussels' support critically important for implementing this strategy.
