# Europe vs. USA: Macron, Merz, and Starmer Demand Trump Reconsider Ukraine Strategy

A tense diplomatic game is unfolding in Washington, where traditional US allies are attempting to rewrite the rules of engagement. Leaders of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom — Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, and Keir Starmer — have joined forces to persuade President Donald Trump to change course regarding negotiations with Russia. Their goal is not merely to adjust rhetoric but to fundamentally reconsider the approaches that emerged following Trump's meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska last year.

### A New Reality on the Frontline

European leaders operate on the assumption that the situation in the conflict has undergone significant changes. In their assessment, the initiative has recently shifted to Ukraine, creating a unique window of opportunity. The E3 group (France, Germany, UK) believes that now is the time to formulate negotiation terms that will be more favorable to Kyiv than those discussed previously.

In a joint statement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, made after negotiations in London, European partners outlined their roadmap:

- Immediate ceasefire.

- Commencement of negotiations taking into account the current frontline.

- Provision of reliable security guarantees for Ukraine, including the possible deployment of multinational forces.

### Europe's Return to the Stage

As noted by Bloomberg, behind these initiatives lies the desire to restore Europe to a more significant role in the negotiation process. Against the backdrop of US-led negotiations hitting a dead end and Washington shifting its focus to the confrontation with Iran, Europeans see a chance to take control of the situation.

E3 leaders hope that Trump will support their proposals and increase pressure on Moscow. If successful, this diplomatic maneuver could pave the way for new negotiations as early as next month. Representatives from Europe, the US, Ukraine, and Russia would participate.

### Sanctions and Lessons of Winter

Parallel to diplomatic efforts, a coercive scenario is being prepared. Bloomberg sources report that the UK and the European Union are working on a new package of sanctions against Russia, which could be introduced in the coming weeks. However, the agency's interlocutors emphasize that these plans may still be adjusted.

A key factor for Europeans is the desire to prevent a repeat of last winter's events, when massive Russian army strikes on energy infrastructure left the Ukrainian population without light and heat. Europe is not prepared to accept such risks.

### The Kremlin's Position

Moscow, however, is skeptical. The Russian leadership rejects the idea of a ceasefire, arguing that it would give Ukraine time to rearm. Furthermore, the Kremlin categorically refuses the presence of European troops on Ukrainian territory.

As a condition for peace, the head of the Kremlin demands that Kyiv renounce part of the Donetsk region that has not yet been captured by Russian troops. Ukraine excludes such conditions. Thus, a deep chasm remains between the positions of the parties, which diplomats must overcome in the coming weeks.
