# European Commission Orders Google to Open Android to AI Competitors and Share Search Data

European regulators have made a tough decision regarding the tech giant Google. As part of complying with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the company is required to provide competitors, including OpenAI, with access to key functions of its services. This decision aims to curb Google's dominant position in the search engine and artificial intelligence markets.

### Opening Android to Third-Party AI Assistants

The European Commission's antitrust regulator issued its verdict after six months of a requirement clarification procedure. According to the ruling, Google must open 11 key functions of the Android operating system to AI competitors. This is intended to increase competition with the Google Gemini service.

A crucial change will be the ability for Android users to invoke third-party AI assistants via voice commands. These innovations are expected to appear in July 2027 alongside the release of a new version of the operating system. European Commission representatives state that the proposed measures include robust guarantees for user privacy and device security. Google will be required to provide access to functions only to competitors whose services meet strict security requirements.

### Access to Data for Search Optimization

The European Commission's decision also concerns data sharing. Google is obligated to share information collected to optimize its search services with OpenAI and other AI chatbot developers that possess search capabilities. Data transfer is permitted only on the condition of full anonymization.

Under the agreement, Google is given the opportunity to assess whether competing services pose risks in terms of cybersecurity and data protection before granting them access. Additionally, a special formula is provided for calculating the cost of the transferred data.

### Google's Reaction to the Regulator's Decision

Google has sharply criticized this decision. A company representative stated that today's rulings threaten to undermine vital privacy and security guarantees for millions of Europeans. The corporation claims it has repeatedly proposed solutions that could protect users while simultaneously meeting DMA objectives. In Google's view, the regulator's current decisions ignore extensive evidence of potential harm to users.
