# Explosion at Launch: Why Jeff Bezos's New Glenn Rocket Failed to Lift Off

The atmosphere at Cape Canaveral on Thursday evening was tense, but it ended not in triumph, but in an explosion. The New Glenn launch vehicle, the pride of Blue Origin and Jeff Bezos's personal project, failed the fire test right on the launch pad. The incident occurred during final preparations for launch, when engineers were supposed to conduct hot fire tests of the engines.

### Anomaly at Launch

The company responded quickly to the incident, confirming that a critical anomaly occurred during the test. Fortunately, there were no casualties or serious injuries — all personnel have been accounted for and are safe. Engineers have already begun investigating the causes, though full details of the accident will be released later.

This is not the first time the ambitious plans of the space giant have clashed with reality. Earlier this year, Blue Origin successfully launched its third New Glenn rocket into orbit, but the fourth mission, scheduled for June 4, is now in jeopardy. The launch was meant to be pivotal for Amazon: aboard were 48 satellites for the Leo service, designed to challenge Elon Musk’s Starlink.

### Battle for Orbit

Competition in the private space industry knows no mercy. Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, positions itself as SpaceX’s main rival. The company develops both tourist rockets like New Shepard and heavy-lift vehicles like New Glenn for commercial and government missions. Collaboration with NASA on lunar programs only raises the stakes.

The New Glenn explosion is a serious blow to reputation, but not fatal. The history of spaceflight is full of examples where failures became stepping stones to success. Still, for Amazon, this means delays in deploying its own satellite network and losing ground in the race against competitors.

Recall that SpaceX has faced similar issues: the Starship V3 rocket exploded in the Indian Ocean immediately after splashdown. Space remains a harsh environment where even the most advanced technologies do not guarantee success on the first try.
