On Saturday, July 4, Finland was forced to impose emergency restrictions on air and sea traffic in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland. The emergency measures, affecting the area of the city of Kotka, were a direct consequence of a massive drone attack by Ukraine on infrastructure in the Leningrad Region of Russia.

### Closure of airspace and sea

Restrictive measures were introduced early in the morning, immediately after 5:00. First, air traffic was suspended, and soon maritime traffic was added to the list. The reason was military operations taking place in close proximity to the Finnish border.

The press office of the Finnish Defence Forces officially confirmed that the restrictions were related to a drone strike on Russian territory. The situation in the sky over Kotka remained tense all morning: fighters conducted intensified patrols to ensure the safety of the airspace.

### Preventive nature of measures

Despite active patrolling and the closure of zones, no drones were detected on Finnish territory itself. As clarified by the country's defense forces, the imposed restrictions were purely preventive, aimed at preventing possible incidents.

The situation normalized quite quickly. By 09:18 in the morning, all restrictions were lifted, and traffic resumed in normal mode. Notably, this is not the first such event of the week: air traffic was last restricted on Thursday.

### Context: strikes on St. Petersburg

Finnish security measures were a reaction to events unfolding in neighboring Russia. On the morning of July 4, residents of St. Petersburg reported a series of loud explosions. Subsequently, it became known that drones were flying over the city, attacking an oil terminal and port infrastructure. A fire broke out in the port area after the strikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the press office of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces confirmed the fact of the attack. According to their data, the target was the port oil infrastructure, which, according to the Kyiv leadership, finances the Russian war machine.

In addition to the strikes on the port, the "Kronstadt" base in the Leningrad Region was attacked. The distance from the Ukrainian border to the site of the strike exceeds 850 kilometers, demonstrating the significant range of the unmanned systems used.
