The French Navy carried out a decisive operation in the Atlantic Ocean, boarding the oil tanker 'Tagor'. The vessel, which departed from Russia, is under international sanctions. This was personally announced by French President Emmanuel Macron on his X social media account.

### Operation in open waters

According to the head of state, the interception was carried out in international waters with the direct support of allies, particularly the United Kingdom. Macron emphasized that the actions of the French fleet were carried out in strict accordance with international maritime law. "Our resolve is unshakable and absolute," he noted.

The President of France pointed to the systemic problem posed by such vessels. According to him, the so-called "shadow fleet" is used to bypass sanctions, violate maritime law, and directly finance Russia's military actions against Ukraine.

### Security and environmental threats

In addition to the political aspect, Macron focused on the risks that such vessels pose to the global community. "It is unacceptable for ships to bypass international sanctions, violate maritime law, and finance the war that Russia has been waging against Ukraine for more than four years," he stated.

Particular attention was paid to environmental and navigational safety. The President noted that vessels that disregard elementary rules of navigation pose a direct threat to the environment and the safety of all participants in maritime transport.

### Precedents and consequences

The interception of the 'Tagor' is not an isolated incident in the practice of the French Navy. In October 2025, the French military boarded the tanker 'Boracay' near Saint-Nazaire. The vessel was suspected of involvement in launching drones over Danish territory. The captain of this vessel was subsequently sentenced to one year in prison and fined 150,000 euros.

The activity of the French Navy in the fight against the shadow fleet continues. In January 2026, France intercepted another sanctioned tanker in the Mediterranean Sea, and in March of the same year, the vessel 'Deyna' was detained.
